The actor claimed that he will "bring some darkness" to the role of Sherlock Holmes in CBS's contemporary update.
"I always feel that characters that have got problems and issues to deal with are more fun to play," Miller told reporters. "Especially when you're trying to balance that with a supposed genius."
The English star added that Elementary is something "you don't necessarily see too much on network television".
He explained: "It was just a plus all round for me to bring some darkness into it, and have some problems and something a little bit edgy - I was very happy about that."
Elementary - which also stars Lucy Liu as Joan Watson - will premiere on September 27 on CBS.
