The Walking Dead's Greg Nicotero has revealed that both NBC and HBO were interested in airing the series.
The zombie drama recently pulled in record ratings for cable network AMC, with 10.9m viewers tuning in for the third season premiere.
"Thank goodness we wound up at AMC - they totally get this show," Nicotero - who also serves as the show's chief make-up effects artist - told The Huffington Post.
Nicotero claimed that neither broadcast network NBC nor cable channel HBO would commit to a Walking Dead series if the levels of violence and gore were not toned down.
"Right from the beginning, [AMC has] been completely trusting and supportive of what we've been trying to do with this series," he said.
The Walking Dead star Laurie Holden (Andrea) recently suggested that the show's new episodes will contain even more violent zombie action.
"I do have to say that in the first two episodes [of season three], I think we killed more... than we did in seasons one and two combined," said the actress.
