NBC is developing a new drama series based on iconic vampire Count Dracula.
The adaptation, scripted by Cole Haddon, will be set in the 1890s and has been pitched as a "soap opera", according to Deadline.
Colin Callender and 24's Tony Krantz will produce the project, which has also been described as "young, sexy and supernatural" and resembling "Dangerous Liaisons meets The Tudors".
The show has a script-to-series commitment with NBC, meaning that it will bypass a filmed pilot and go straight to series if the network approves of Haddon's pilot script.
Famous adaptations of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula include a 1931 film version starring Bela Lugosi, a 1958 release with Christopher Lee and Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 adaptation.
NBC is developing a number of horror-themed shows for the 2012-13 television season, including a remake of The Munsters from Pushing Daisies creator Bryan Fuller.
X-Men and Superman Returns director Bryan Singer is in line to produce and direct the pilot.
Fuller is also working on a series featuring cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter, the character famously played by Anthony Hopkins in 1991 film The Silence of the Lambs.
