The MTV Movie Awards are shaking things up this year.
With the addition of new executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic/Den of Thieves, the awards ceremony is undergoing some reinvention for its 21st go-round, which takes place June 3 at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.
Among the biggest change: Five new categories have been introduced -- with one of the new categories to be awarded exclusively by a special academy of directors.
The new categories are Best Music, Best On-Screen Transformation, Best Gut-Wrenching Performance, Best Cast and Best On-Screen Dirtbag and Breakthrough Performance, which will be awarded by the panel of directors.
They join pre-existing categories Movie of the Year, Best Female Performance, Best Male Performance, Breakthrough Performance, Best Comedic Performance, Best Kiss and Best Fight.
“The Movie Awards will be a re-imagined celebration of the most popular films and performances from the past year,” MTV president Stephen Friedman said of the shakeup. “This year, we’ve overhauled categories and added a Breakthrough Performance award that will be chosen by some of the best directors in the world."
MTV also announced that this year's awards ceremony will include a performance by "We Are Young" band fun., in the hopes of "making music a more central experience to the overall show," according to Friedman.
