Sean Combs Plans New Music Channel -- Revolt
Sean Combs plans to announce a new music channel, Revolt, that will be influenced by the pace of social networking sites, The New York Times reported.
With the new network, the music mogul will follow in the footsteps of Oprah Winfrey, who launched her own network last year. OWN has since struggled for ratings. Combs' Revolt will challenge Viacom's MTV and VH1, which have largely abdicated their dominance of music television in favor of documentaries, reality shows, and, in the case of MTV, scripted series.
Combs, the chief executive of Bad Boy Entertainment, has produced reality competitions including "Making the Band," "I Want to Work for Diddy," and "StarMaker."
Comcast, the country's largest cable company, will carry Revolt on some of its local cable systems, the Times said. The company promised to carry more minority-owned channels as it was seeking government approval for its majority acquisition of NBCUniversal.
Combs' channel is one of the ones it decided to carry, the Times said. Comcast declined comment.
