'Amazing Adventures Of Kavalier And Clay' To HBO? Stephen Daldry Wants To Adapt Michael Chabon Novel

'Amazing Adventures Of Kavalier And Clay' To HBO? Stephen Daldry Wants To Adapt Michael Chabon Novel

Michael Chabon's "The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" could be coming to a screen near you.

According to Collider, director Stephen Daldry wants to turn the novel into a miniseries for HBO.

"I would love to do something for TV," he said. "I wanna do Kavalier & Clay on HBO as an eight-parter. It'll be so much better as a series, honestly."

There's just one catch -- Daldry doesn't have the rights to the book. Paramount does -- though Daldry himself was signed on at one point to direct a film version, the project has continued to languish.

"I spent a year working on it with Michael Chabon, so we're pretty close," Daldry told Collider. "And the rights, good question. Will Paramount give them to me? I don't know. It'll be a really good one. It'd go great with 'Boardwalk Empire.'"

HBO is already working with Chabon and wife Ayelet Waldman to develop a series called "Hobgoblin," which tells the story of magicians and con men working together to bring down Hitler. In June, it was announced that Darren Aronofsky will direct the pilot for the show.

Should HBO pick up the "Kavalier and Clay" project, it will be only one among what is a rapidly growing list of highbrow literary adaptations the network has taken on in the past year, to be turned into series, miniseries, and movies. Okay, are you ready? Here we go:

Along with the highly anticipated adaptation of Jonathan Franzen's epic midwestern family drama "The Corrections" (starring Chris Cooper, Dianne Wiest and Ewan McGregor, and directed by Noah Baumbach) and David Milch's adaptation of William Faulkner's work, HBO has announced its intention to adapt books including Karen Russell's Floridian picaresque "Swamplandia," Neil Gaiman's road-trip fantasy tale "American Gods," Stephen King's multi-part fantasy series "Dark Tower" series, Jennifer Egan's Pulitzer-winning "A Visit From the Goon Squad," Tom Perrotta's post-Rapture story "The Leftovers," Chad Harbach's baseball bildungsroman "The Art of Fielding," Susanna Moore's dark women's prison psychodrama, "The Big Girls," Carl Hiaasen's environmental thriller "Skinny Dip," Sara Gran's 1950s noir "Dope," Ann Hood's story of grief and recovery, "The Knitting Circle" (produced by, and starring, Katherine Heigl) and, with the BBC, Hilary Mantel's Booker Prize winning Tudor-era historical novel "Wolf Hall," and Robert Graves' classic Roman Empire novel "I, Claudius."

In addition to all that, Gary Shteyngart, author of "Super Sad True Love Story," is working on an original pilot for HBO, as is Sam Lipsyte, author of recent novel, "The Ask." It's getting to the point where acclaimed novelists may start to feel left out if they're not working with HBO.

HBO has also picked up some non-fiction titles for adaptation, including Diana Henriques' "The Wizard Of Lies: Bernie Madoff And The Death Of Trust" (with Robert DeNiro reportedly in talks to star), Robert Caro's biography of Robert Moses, "The Power Broker," Michael Gross' "Unreal Estate: Money, Ambition and the Lust for Land in Los Angeles," Barton Gellman's "Angler: The Cheney Vice Presidency," Raymond R. Sarlot and Fred Basten's memoir "Life at The Marmont" (about life at legendary Los Angeles hotel, Chateau Marmont, with Aaron Sorkin and John Krasinski attached), and Nicholas Johnson's Antarctica memoir, "Big Dead Place" (produced by, and potentially starring James Gandolfini). They will soon release their adaptation of Mark Halperin and John Heilemann's "Game Change," following their made-for-TV movie based on Andrew Sorkin's re-telling of the financial collapse, "Too Big To Fail" earlier this year.

HBO isn't just adapting books — films, and even websites, are fair game, too. The network also has plans to adapt the movie "The Kids Are Alright" into a TV series. They will do the same for Ian Palmer's documentary about bare-knuckled boxing bouts in Ireland, "Knuckle" (to be written by Irvine Welsh) and website, Lifestylelemonaid.com .

Of course both "Game of Thrones" (based on the books by George R.R. Martin), "Boardwalk Empire" (based on Nelson Johnson's "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City") and "True Blood" (based on the books by Charlaine Harris), two of HBO's current titles, were also adapted from popular books, as was their successful miniseries "Mildred Pierce." And though HBO is the most prolific network, it's not the only one to turn its eye towards novels for the small screen -- a tactic that the British have long employed in adapting its country's classic novels.

Still, while HBO's current slate of shows contains more original shows (not adapted from any other source) than adaptations, it looks as if the future could be another story.

Will Alec Baldwin Get '30 Rock' thrown Off American Airlines, Too?

Will Alec Baldwin Get '30 Rock' thrown Off American Airlines, Too?

Could Alec Baldwin manage to get Liz Lemon, Tracy Jordan and Kenneth the Page tossed off of American Airlines' flights, too?

Flight attendants at American have inquired about having Baldwin's "30 Rock" removed from the company's in-flight entertainment, following the actor's on-board hissy-fit and subsequent digs at the airline, its employees and modern-day air travel in general, a spokesperson for the airlines has confirmed.

Sadly for the aggrieved attendants, it doesn't appear that Jack Donaghy will be removed as easily as was the actor who plays him.

"There have been some discussions about all this, but I don't know that we can call this a 'formal' request," the spokesperson tells.

A spokesperson for the Association of Professional Flight Attendants union confirms that the anti-Baldwin initiative is unlikely to take off. According to the spokesperson, the union has no intention of throwing its weight behind the drive to have "30 Rock" pulled -- and the union feels the Baldwin situation is being handled properly as it is.

In fact, if "30 Rock" disappears, you can blame the network that airs it.

"NBC routinely rotates programs on and off what is offered onboard, and not all programing is the same on every flight," the American Airlines spokesperson tells TheWrap. "At this time, 30 Rock continues to air on some of our flights, but not others, which is our standard programming procedure."

Baldwin was removed from an American Los Angeles-to-New York flight on Dec. 6 after ignoring multiple requests to turn off his phone while his plane sat at the gate. The actor claimed that he was being harassed for playing the game Words With Friends, but according to crew members on the flight and the airline itself, Baldwin flew off the handle, slamming the door of the airplane lavatory with such force that the flight's captain intervened.

After being removed from the plane (he was booked onto another American flight, according to his spokesperson), Baldwin taunted the airline with a series of tweets. One tweet, making light of the airline's recent financial woes, offered the hashtag "#nowonderamericaairisbankrupt."

Since then, Baldwin -- apparently unable to leave bad enough alone -- has continued to take digs at the airline. In a snarky, non-apology-apology published by the Huffington Post, Baldwin lamented the state of modern air travel, lamenting the "filthy planes, barely edible meals" and the "paramilitary bearing" of airlines in the post-9/11 era.

The screed went on to complain that flight attendants "have made flying a Greyhound bus experience." (That last comment prompted a response from the Greyhound bus company, whose CEO asked that Baldwin apologize for the comment.)

Over the weekend, Baldwin continued to pick at the scab left from his airplane meltdown.

The actor made an appearance on "Saturday Night Live"'s "Weekend Update" as Capt. Steve Rogers -- the supposed captain of the flight Baldwin was removed from -- to apologize to himself.

USA to Go Up Against Networks in Upfront Week

USA to Go Up Against Networks in Upfront Week

USA Network is ready to go toe-to-toe with the big boys.

The cable outlet is holding its first official presentation during upfront week, an event generally reserved for networks, with a few exceptions. Though USA typically holds its presentation around the time of the upfronts, this is its first presentation during the official period when broadcasters present their fare to potential advertisers.

The move comes at a time when USA is definitely feeling its oats -- on Monday, the outlet announced that it is cable's No. 1 network for the sixth year in a row, besting the competition in a number of categories, including the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic and total viewers.

USA's upfront week event will take place the evening of May 17, 2012, at the Alice Tully Hall, Starr Theater at Lincoln Center in New York City. Cast members from "Burn Notice," "Covert Affairs," "Fairly Legal," "In Plain Sight," "Necessary Roughness," "Psych," "Royal Pains," "Suits," "White Collar" and its upcoming legal offering "Common Law," which premieres Jan. 26.

Joining the actress in the outing are Bonnie Somerville (Cashmere Mafia, NYPD Blue) as Amy’s friend/business partner, who is accused of murder, and Kathryn Joosten (Desperate Housewives) as the murder victim’s neighbor.

True Blood‘s James Frain rounds out the crowded guest cast.

The episode is slated to air during February sweeps.

Charlie Sheen Accidentally Tweets Cell Number Intended for Justin Bieber

Charlie Sheen Accidentally Tweets Cell Number Intended for Justin Bieber

The pop phenom tells THR Sheen was "WINNING!" after he tried to send a direct message via Twitter, but mistakenly sent his digits out to all of his 5 million followers.

Charlie Sheen is a Belieber. Though it may have cost him his phone.

The actor was trying to direct message Justin Bieber Dec. 7 when he accidentally tweeted his cell phone number to his main twitter feed instead.

"310-954-7277 Call me bro. C," said the former Two and a Half Men star, reports the New York Post.

'Charlie's phone immediately went into meltdown,' a source told the paper. 'It was ringing wildly, and he got 1,800 text messages in minutes.'

The source said Sheen ended up answering a few of the calls, jokingly saying, "Ray's Pizza" and "Winning."

'But his phone just continued ringing and buzzing and eventually just completely melted down. Charlie was like, "I guess I need a new phone."'

The number has now been disconnected.

Bieber's response? "WINNING!" he tells The Hollywood Reporter. However, he has yet to call Sheen.

The actor was dining with friends at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas when he sent the tweet.

AMC's The Killing Gets Help From Mark Moses

AMC's The Killing Gets Help From Mark Moses

Looks like The Killing is getting serious about solving Rosie Larsen’s murder. Desperate, even.

Mark Moses, well-known for playing Paul Young on ABC’s Housewives, is joining the AMC series in Season 2 for a major arc as Lt. Carlson, a new detective at the Seattle police department, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Mark Moses Nabs Fairly Legal Role

As TVLine previously reported, Lt. Carlson is described as a clean-cut and well-dressed lawman who keeps tabs on which way the political winds are blowing. He will help investigate Rosie’s death in at least eight episodes.

Moses’ casting on The Killing marks a reunion for the actor and AMC. He memorably played Peggy’s lover and account services head Herman “Duck” Phillips on Mad Men. Recently, he has guested on episodes of Covert Affairs and Criminal Minds.

Season 2 of The Killing will debut in the spring.

Tim Gunn, 'Modern Family' Teen Debut Disney Kiddie Princess: 'Sofia the First'

Tim Gunn, 'Modern Family' Teen Debut Disney Kiddie Princess: 'Sofia the First'

You can't go wrong pitching all things blingy to little girls, and that -- along with a dash of preschool-friendly morality -- is the idea behind Disney's new princess character, "Sofia the First."

The company confirms that it is introducing an animated movie and TV series that will revolve around Sofia, the purple-gowned kiddie princess. (Though a Disney creation, and a princess, she is not part of the Disney Princess lineup).

"Sofia the First" adventures will begin with the titular little girl, who becomes a princess when her mom marries the king of her storybook world.

Sofia and her mom then pack up and move to the royal castle, where her fancy, glamorous new life includes frilly frocks and Amber and James, her new stepbrother and stepsister. Other Disney Princesses, including Cinderella, will pop up in Sofia's world, and "Sleeping Beauty" fairies Fauna, Flora and Merryweather will appear as the headmistresses of Royal Prep, Sofia's school.

The "Sofia" movie will debut in fall 2012, with the TV series following in spring 2013. "Modern Family" star Ariel Winter will voice Sofia, with "Grey's Anatomy" star Sara Ramirez as her mom, Queen Miranda, "Let's Make a Deal" host Wayne Brady as a clever rabbit named Clover and "Project Runway" fashion guru Tim Gunn voicing Baileywick, the Royal Steward.

"Sofia" will debut on the Disney Channel and Disney Junior, the daytime block of programming that will launch as its own cable channel early in 2012. Disney Junior is aimed at the 2-7-year-old age group.

"Although Sofia will have plenty of pretty dresses and sparkly shoes, our stories will show Sofia, and our viewers, that what makes a real princess is what's inside, not what's outside," said Nancy Kanter, senior vice president of programming and general manager for Disney Junior Worldwide. "That the inner character of kindness, generosity, loyalty, honesty and grace make you special, not the dress you wear.

"In Sofia, we have a 'peer to peer princess,' a relatable girl experiencing the same social issues as our young viewers … learning how to fit in, making new friends, conquering new skills and building sibling relationships."

Sarah Palin Shopping New Reality Show

Sarah Palin Shopping New Reality Show

Sarah Palin is shopping a new reality show that would follow her husband Todd's snowmobile adventures, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

In 2010, Palin invited cameras to her home for TLC's 'Sarah Palin's Alaska.' However, the network has reportedly passed on the new project. TLTV reports Palin and 'Sara Palin's Alaska' producer Mark Burnett are pitching the program focusing on her husband and his career as a snowmobile racer. A&E Networks, which entered a bidding war with Discovery over 'Sarah Palin's Alaska,' has also passed on the show.

'Sarah Palin's Alaska' cost more than $1 million an episode and the team is asking for a similar payday, TLTV says.

The series premiere of 'Sarah Palin's Alaska' brought in a sizable 5 million viewers for TLC. It dropped to about 3.2 million viewers per episode, but following the finale, there were no plans for a second season.

Though networks don't seem interested in Todd, Palin's hair salon got its own TV special in September: The Beehive was featured in TLC's 'Big Hair Alaska.'

Lime TV Items: Jennifer Beals Cops Castle Gig, Lisa Rinna Returns to Days and More!

Jennifer Beals is Castle-bound.

The Chicago Code/L Word alumna has landed a two-episode guest spot on the ABC drama, playing Sophia, a “smart, commanding, and sexy” CIA agent helping Castle and Beckett search for a fellow operative who has gone rogue, TVGuide.com reports. Turns out, Sophia has a complicated past with the wily author, which, of course, causes tensions among the TLTVeesome. Beals’ episodes are slated to air in February.

Speaking of Castle, TV Guide Magazine has a first look here at the Jan. 9 I Dos of Kevin and Jenny, played by real-life spouses Seamus and Juliana Dever.

Ready for more of today’s TV dish? Well…

• Lisa Rinna will reprise her role as Billie Reed on Days of Our Lives beginning March 8, per The Hollywood Reporter. Details surrounding Billie’s return to Salem are being kept under wraps, but she was last seen (portrayed by Julie Pinson) in 2008 when she relocated to London.

• Hot In Cleveland is staging a Mary Tyler Moore reunion. Ed Asner will appear opposite his former co-star Betty White in an episode of the TV Land hit slated to air next summer, EW.com reports.

• ABC is airing a Once Upon a Time mini-marathon on New Year’s Day. Four episodes will air consecutively beginning at 7/6c, though they are not the four most recent installments; the Jiminy Cricket-centric hour is not in the lineup.

• Spy Kids star Daryl Sabara and Necessary Roughness’ Hannah Marks will tackle the roles of Hanson and Gracie, respectively, on an upcoming Hansel and Gretel-esque episode of NBC’s Grimm, per EW.com.

• Jamie Gertz (Still Standing) has landed the lead in a single-camera comedy pilot for ABC, Deadline reports. The potential series centers on a family who moves to an upscale New Jersey community only to discover their neighbors are actually aliens.

• Rob Huebel (Children’s Hospital) and Paul Scheer (The League) have been named hosts of the 17th annual Critics’ Choice Awards, which will air live on VH1 Thursday, Jan. 12.

• Teen Wolf‘s Tyler Posey and pop star Demi Lovato will co-host MTV’s annual New Year’s Eve special.

Lowe's defends pulling ads from Muslim TV show

Lowe's defends pulling ads from Muslim TV show

U.S. home improvement chain Lowe's Monday defended its decision to pull advertising from reality TV show "All-American Muslim" amid charges the company had given in to bigotry.

"All-American Muslim," which airs on TLC, follows several Muslim families in and around the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, Michigan, which is home to one of the largest Muslim populations in the United States and its largest mosque.

It has been accused by one Florida group to be propaganda. But the decision by Lowe's sparked an outcry by defenders of the show.

Lowe's employed its Facebook page to defend itself and called "All-American Muslim," a "lightning rod" for "strong political and societal views."

Lowe's spokeswoman Karen Cobb said the company was one of "dozens" of companies to pull their advertising late last month. Names of other companies were not immediately available.

Laurie Goldberg, a TLC spokeswoman, declined to say how many companies have pulled their advertising from the show, which attracts about a million viewers per week.

"We stand behind the show 'All-American Muslim' and we're happy the show has strong advertising support," Goldberg said.

Hip hop mogul Russell Simmons said in a series of messages on Twitter defending the embattled reality T.V. show that he had bought up the remaining ad spots.

"Just purchased remaining spots for #allamericanmuslim for next week," Simmons said. "The show is now sold out! keep your money @lowes and we will keep ours."

A spokeswoman for Simmons said he had purchased two 30-second ads, but said Simmons had not decided what the content of those ads would be.

The Florida Family Association, a little-known group that has campaigned against the show, has branded "All-American Muslim" "propaganda" that is "clearly designed to counter legitimate and present-day concerns about many Muslims who are advancing Islamic fundamentalism and Sharia law."

But U.S. Representative Keith Ellison, who is Muslim, said in a statement that Lowe's had "chosen to uphold the beliefs of a fringe hate group" and given in to intolerance.

"Corporate America needs to take a stand against these anti-Muslim fringe groups and stand up for what is right because this is what it means to be an American," he said.

'Canada's Smartest Person': Are You Him/Her?

'Canada's Smartest Person': Are You Him/Her?

Are you smarter than a fifth grader, or so much more? Do you have the brains of Sheldon Cooper from 'The Big Bang Theory,' Temperance Brennan from 'Bones,' or 'Criminal Minds' Spencer Reid? Or maybe you've just taken past 'Test the Nation' IQ tests and did considerably well.

Whether you are a genius, or just think you are, CBC is searching for the best and brightest the nation has to offer for their upcoming special, 'Canada's Smartest Person.'

But let's be clear -- it's not about how smart you are; rather, how you are smart. What now, you ask? According to 'Theory of Multiple Intelligences,' there are actually six main areas of intelligence: Logical, Visual, Physical, Linguistic, Musical and Social. The person with the most versatile smarts will be crowned Canada's Smartest Person.

The two-hour event will "draw upon the latest research to show that there is more to intelligence than having a high IQ score, or being a whiz at math or trivia," reads the press release.

Only four Canadians will make it to the final broadcast, which will be taped in front of a live studio audience, but viewers can participate from home. Also, a 'Canada's Smartest Person' app will be released to coincide with the show and will allow Canadians to take part in challenges when the contestants do.

The two-hour reality competition special premieres in March 2012 on CBC, but Canadians have from now until Jan. 1, 2012 at 11:59PM. ET to apply, or submit an unsuspecting family member or friend for consideration.

Justin Bieber Christmas Special: Coming Home to Canada

Justin Bieber Christmas Special: Coming Home to Canada

The pop star is returning to Toronto to tape an exclusive holiday special for MuchMusic and CTV. 'MuchMusic Presents Justin Bieber: Home for the Holidays' is the perfect way to celebrate the fast-approaching yuletide season, as Biebs performs hits from his Christmas album, 'Under the Mistletoe,' his favourite covers, and, of course, the not-so-festive but equally cheerful "Baby."
"The holidays are a very special time of the year for me and I'm looking forward to coming home and ringing them in with my friends and family," said Bieber in a press release.

After Bieber tweeted his return to Canada last week, which was then retweeted hundreds of times over, many wondered if his girlfriend, Selena Gomez, will be joining him. But the real question is, will Mariah Carey show up to sing their duet, "All I Want for Christmas?"

The 30-minute acoustic set will be shot in Toronto, but more details about the location and tickets for the taping will be announced in the coming weeks. Fans have a chance to experience the magical Bieber experience; the channel is flying a winner and a guest to see the "secret" show. (Check out more details before the contest closes on Monday, Dec. 19.)

All proceeds from the concert will benefit Justin's BELIEVE charity drive. His performance will not only satiate his most avid fans, but he's also giving back TLTVough his charity. Way to get into the holiday spirit, Biebs.

HBO's 'Veep' With Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Judd Apatow's 'Girls'

HBO's 'Veep' With Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Judd Apatow's 'Girls'

Along with the preview of 'Luck' HBO unleashed two very different, yet still amusing new comedies, 'Veep' and 'Girls.'

In 'Veep' (premiering April 2012), Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars as the vice president of the United States.

'Girls' comes from 'Tiny Furniture' writer/star Lena Dunham and Judd Apatow. HBO describes the show as a "comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their early 20s." Dunham's 'Tiny Furniture' co-star Jemima Kirke, 'NBC Nightly News' anchor Brian Williams' daughter Allison Williams, stage actor Adam Driver and 'Mad Men's' Zosia Mamet also star. 'Girls' also has an April 2012 premiere date.

'Robot Chicken' Producer On His New Larry David, Larry Flynt Comedy Central Project

'Robot Chicken' Producer On His New Larry David, Larry Flynt Comedy Central Project

Alex Bulkley talks to TLTV about talking animals, retired superheroes and why reviving a 'Liquid Television' style concept could prove very lucrative.

If Alex Bulkley and his ShadowMachine co-founder Corey Campodonico have their way, they’ll be at the center of TV’s animation boom.

The duo behind Robot Chicken is developing an animation showcase entitled TripTank at Comedy Central. The project is set to feature a collection of recurring animated shorts built into a half-hour block much like the 1990's hit Liquid Television. The plots, which will come from such names as Will Ferrell's partner Adam McKay, Tom Gammill (The Simpsons, Monk) and Jon Glaser (Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Human Giant), range from a magical alcoholic wheelchair helping sick children to a group of aliens studying the world’s most average guy.

To hear Bulkley tell it, TripTank will serve as an animation farm league for MTV Networks, which will have the first shot at turning the shorts into full-fledged series, a trajectory followed by The Simpsons, South Park and Beavis & Butthead (the latter got its start as a short on Liquid Television). The producer spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the concept, the most popular pitches and the involvement of both Larry David and Larry Flynt.

TLTV: How did this project come about?

Bulkley: There are a ton of creators with great projects, and often times it’s a very tough sell to networks. Really, it’s amazing how few opportunities R-rated or adult animation has out there. Very often, networks don’t really understand what animation can be. That's why shows like South Park, The Simpsons, Beavis & Butthead or even our show Robot Chicken all started out as well-produced shorts. Once you can see that worlds in animation, you find your audience and off it goes. So that’s the genesis of this. We created a platform for all of these great concepts --we're doing all of the formats of animation-- to come together and get a shot at broadcast quality production.

TLTV: I imagine there were some themes that got pitched often. What were they?

Bulkley: We were looking for great animation shows for the 18 to 34 demo, so the retired superhero is definitely in the perpetual zeitgeist. It’s incredible how many mundane life-of-a-superhero shows are floating around. Lots of talking animals too. What we were focused on were good premises that have series potential, as opposed to just one-off jokes.

TLTV: Walk us TLTVough the pitch process.

Bulkley: We did a whirlwind of meetings in New York, and then a lot in LA. We met primarily with comedians; we ran TLTVough all of the agencies’ clients. People would sit down with us and some would have just a show concept; others had fully realized artwork or scripts.

TLTV: What is the end goal with something like this? I assume ShadowMachine will remain on as producer if these shorts get picked up to stand-alone series?

Bulkley: That’s the idea. This is really a farm league for MTV networks as a whole. This is their opportunity to see what works and what doesn’t. They’ll get the first shot. And sure, those spin offs are huge opportunities for our company too. If we find even one that spins off and is successful, that’s enormous for us. Over the course of a season, we’ll probably end up with 30 individual shows or candidates. Each episode is currently a half hour, which could include somewhere between five and eight shorts depending on the timing. Currently, they’re all running at about the four or five minute range.

TLTV: What can you share about the storylines from the shorts you’ve chosen?

Bulkley: One of the highlights is I Owe Larry David Money, which was created by Laura Kightlinger (Will & Grace, Pretend Time). She stars with Larry David and guest star Larry Flynt, who we actually voiced a little while ago. So the plan would be to pick up say seven or eight of those, and run them over the course of what will be TripTank's season one.

Also, we have a great show called The Coliseum by Tommy Blacha (Pretend Time, Mind of Mencia). It’s a behind the scenes look at the Roman Colosseum. Imagine a behind the scenes at Saturday Night Live, but with all of the blood, gore and carnage. It’s absolutely hilarious.

TLTV: Why Comedy Central?

Bulkley: We felt like they had the right audience. It's a broad audience and its comedy-based, so people know what to expect there. We’ve had more than 300 pitches come to us over the past eight or nine months. We brought it down to about 15, and now the idea is that we’re going to produce the crème de la crème for this first episode. It’s very similar to the format of Liquid Television. It’s a block of animation, and you’ll never know what will appear in each episode.

Charlie Sheen's 'Anger Management' Lands First International Deal With Canada's CTV

Charlie Sheen's 'Anger Management' Lands First International Deal With Canada's CTV

The Lionsgate sitcom about an ear-steaming anger management therapist, played by the former “Two and a Half Men” star, will air on the Bell Media owned network.

Canadian broadcaster Bell Media has acquired the Sheen-starring sitcom from distributor Debmar-Mercury for its CTV network.

That’s the same Bell Media that simulcasts CBS’ Two and a Half Men and aired the Comedy Central roast of Sheen in Canada.

Sheen announced his return to Canada with the Lionsgate Television sitcom based on the movie Anger Management by telling Canadians on Monday night that they are a nice bunch, but hold in far too much anger.

“Why else would you drink so much beer, put on shoes with sharp blades, and smack each other around with wooden sticks?" a snarky Sheen said during the taped on-air message on the CTV network.

CTV president of programming and sports Phil King said Anger Management had already generated ample industry buzz even before production starts in early 2012.

"With the pedigree behind this production, we're confident this program will deliver to both viewers and advertisers alike,” King added.

Canada is among the first international territories to acquire Anger Management after FX got behind the Lionsgate sitcom in October.

The Canadian distribution deal was hammered out by Lionsgate international TV executives Peter Iacono and Lawrence Szabo and Bell Media's Mike Cosentino, senior vp of programming at CTV Networks.

And Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein acted for Debmar-Mercury.

Bruce Helford will executive produce and showrun Anger Management, which will also be produced by Joe Roth and Revolution Studios' Vince Totino, and Sheen’s manager Mark Burg.

Sheen, who has overhauled his career after drug benders and a public tirade against Two and a Half Men co-creator Chuck Lorre, has an equity stake in Anger Management.

Netflix Prepping Eli Roth-Directed Horror Series

The company is nearing a 13-episode order for "Hemlock Grove," a thriller based on Brian McGreevy’s upcoming horror novel by the same name.

Netflix is going gory.

In the streaming service's continued and aggressive foray into the original content business, it is nearing a deal for Eli Roth to direct and executive produce hour-long horror series Hemlock Grove. The project, which will be granted a 13 episode order, is based on Brian McGreevy’s upcoming gothic horror novel by the same name.

The project, which hails from the newly launched Gaumont International Television, centers on the body of a young girl who is found mangled and murdered in the woods of Hemlock Grove, Penn. McGreevy is on board to co-write and executive produce the script with his writing partner Lee Shipman. Mad Hatter’s Michael Connolly will serve as a co-executive producer on the series, with Strike Entertainment's Eric Newman attached as an EP.

The news follows Netflix's other original projects, David Fincher's House of Cards, Jenji Kohan's Orange is the New Black and the resurrection of Fox's cult comedy Arrested Development, as well as its continued efforts to lock up deals with content providers such as the CW and AMC. "There are no signs of us reeling in spending," Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos recently told The Hollywood Reporter.

More recently, Netflix has been at the center of still more news. This time, rumblings about a potential sale. The company's shares briefly jumped more 7 percent in afternoon trading Monday as reports surfaced that Verizon is interested in acquiring the company.

Roth, whose credits include Discovery's docuseries Curiosity, The Last Exorcism, Grindhouse and Hostel, is repped by CAA.

'Fear Factor' premiere: Is it 'way grosser' than ever?

'Fear Factor' premiere: Is it 'way grosser' than ever?

Yes, after six years off the air, "Fear Factor" returned to NBC on Monday night -- with Joe Rogan returning to his position as the host. It's one of the longest hiatuses in TV history, and it remains to be seen whether the years off the air will show in the ratings.

An NBC exec promised critics that the show would be "less gross" than we've seen previously, but Rogan tells EW that's not the case.

"That's an outright lie," he says. "They should go to jail for that lie. It's way grosser. But it's also much more spectacular. The stunts are much bigger. The evolution of the stunt technology allows us to do a lot of crazy stuff."

He explains that they elevated the standard for the three stunts that show up in each episode. "The way to bring this show back is to make it bigger and crazier and that's what they've done. We have an A, B, C format -- where the A stunt is the opening, the B stunt is the gross one, and the C stunt is the spectacular stunt where they win the money. Now the A stunt look like C stunts and the C stunts look like giant scenes in an Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie."

During the hiatus, Rogan continued to work in stand-up comedy, often making fun of "Fear Factor" rather mercilessly. "I'm sure they rather me not make fun of it," he says of producers. "But as a comic I would be a fraud if I didn't make fun of it. How can you be the host of that f-king show and not make fun of it? It is comedy."
