John Thomson on 'Cold Feet' return: 'Rachel death hard to overcome'

John Thomson on 'Cold Feet' return: 'Rachel death hard to overcome'

John Thomson has admitted that a potential Cold Feet return could be tricky considering the death of Rachel (Helen Baxendale).

The 43-year-old actor told Metro that there is a definite possibility the cast will reunite for another episode of the classic ITV drama.

Thomson explained: "I'm asked every week when it's coming back. It's phenomenal. We haven't done it for nine years but people still want a new series.

"The cast was great. It was shot on 16mm film, so it looked great. Nothing's shot on film anymore. And it had great writing. It appealed to both men and women. There's a demographic there that wants to see more.

"I'd definitely do it. The last time there were rumblings of a sequel, we were asked by our agents and were all quite keen to do it."

The star added: "The big problem is what to do with Helen's character. She died in the final episode, so you couldn't bring her back without being cheesy - maybe a twin, a changeling, an alien abduction.

"I'm up for it but it's opening a can of worms. You'd be hard-pushed to match or better the quality."

BBC unions issue warning over potential Diamond Jubilee strike

BBC unions issue warning over potential Diamond Jubilee strike

Broadcasting unions have warned that the BBC's coverage of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in early June could be disrupted by strike action, after they rejected a "derisory pay award" from the corporation.

The National Union of Journalists, Unite and Bectu said that they are today balloting their members at the BBC for potential industrial action.

They said that union members are frustrated at the BBC's "refusal" to negotiate on its 2012 pay offer of a 1% rise, subject to a minimum increase of £400.

BBC bosses are also said to have written to staff to inform them that the pay change will be implemented from June rather than August as planned.

The unions want a pay increase of 2%, subject to a minimum increase of £1,000. They have justified this "modest claim" by saying that BBC staff salaries have fallen 8% behind inflation since 2007.

The Jubilee celebrations are due to go ahead on the four-day bank holiday weekend beginning June 2, including the Thames pageant on June 3 and the BBC's Diamond Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace on June 4, which is due to feature stars such as Sir Paul McCartney, Kylie Minogue, Stevie Wonder and Elton John.

The unions have served notice of a strike ballot with a planned balloting period beginning on April 30, and concluding on May 21. If it gains sufficient support, a strike could be called for June, potentially causing major headaches for the corporation.

Alongside the Jubilee, a strike could also hit coverage of other events in June, including Euro 2012, the Wimbledon tennis championships, the British Grand Prix and the British Open golf tournament, along with the London Olympics, starting on June 27.

Michelle Stanistreet, NUJ general secretary, accused the BBC of making "no attempt at genuine negotiation" in the talks, and said that the dispute is not just about pay.

"It is about the BBC's failure to negotiate on a range of issues affecting our members. This includes the failure of the BBC management to properly implement a re-deployment scheme that was agreed in autumn," she said.

"This has left us with members needlessly facing compulsory redundancy. There are jobs these members could go to, but the BBC is failing to fulfil its part of the bargain."

Bectu general secretary Gerry Morrissey added: "By going over the unions' heads and increasing our members' salaries before negations are concluded, the BBC is very helpfully placing a down-payment in our members' pockets to help them through the forthcoming Jubilee strike.

"This is an act of poor faith. It adds injury to the insulting pay offer. The BBC had actually asked us to consult members and had scheduled a meeting on pay with us for next week.

"We had informed them that a direct offer of 1% would be seen as a hostile act by the joint unions. We now have no option but to call a strike ballot at the earliest opportunity."

The BBC is currently facing major spending cuts as part of the new licence fee settlement agreed with the government in late 2010. Around 2,000 jobs are to go as part of BBC director general Mark Thompson's Delivering Quality First initiative, which aims to save around £800m.

In response to the strike ballot at unions, a BBC spokesman said: "This year we have decided to implement the pay increase early as a small way of recognising the hard work that is going on across the BBC in implementing the savings we need to make and meeting the challenges we face in 2012.

"We are very disappointed that the unions have decided to ballot their members about taking industrial action. The economic climate remains tough for everyone and this action will not change our circumstances."

'Doctor Who's Steven Moffat: 'The companion is the main character'

'Doctor Who's Steven Moffat: 'The companion is the main character'

Doctor Who exec Steven Moffat has suggested that the Time Lord's companion is the show's "main character".

The showrunner told BBC America that the story of the sci-fi drama is "always the story of the companion".

"It's always their story," said Moffat. "It was Rose Tyler's (Billie Piper) story, it's Amy Pond's (Karen Gillan) story - the story of the time they knew the Doctor and how that began, how it developed and how it ended."

He continued: "The story begins again, not so much with the new Doctor, but with the new companion. The Doctor's the hero, but they're the main character."

Moffat also described the idea of the Doctor (Matt Smith) travelling alone as "depressing" and "unhealthy".

"I thought about the Doctor travelling on his own and it always faintly depresses me," he admitted.

"I'm not sure what he does on his own but I don't think it would be healthy. He's far too old and he's seen too much."

New Doctor Who companion Jenna-Louise Coleman was unveiled to the public last month.

The Titanic actress will make her debut in the BBC drama's 2012 Christmas special.

Louis Theroux: 'I feared dementia documentary was a mistake'

Louis Theroux: 'I feared dementia documentary was a mistake'

Louis Theroux has admitted that he worried his upcoming documentaries about sufferers of dementia and autism were "a mistake".

The journalist said that at times he felt uncomfortable interviewing "vulnerable" people for his Extreme Love programme and wondered whether it was right for him to be "let loose among the mentally ill".

"Several months on from the decision to make these shows, I look back to see that in important respects they are not so different from ones I've made investigating weird worlds and strange pastimes," he wrote in The Telegraph.

"They too involve acts that cut to the core of what it means to be human: the meaning of love and loyalty; the duties and limits of parenthood and marriage; the nature of identity."

He added: "For me, making these films has been an adventure, a revelation, occasionally a strain, more often a pleasure. I'm as proud of these shows as I am of anything I've ever done."

Louis Theroux: Extreme Love airs tonight (April 19) at 9pm on BBC Two.

'Mad Men' ratings on pay-TV defended by Sky Atlantic

'Mad Men' ratings on pay-TV defended by Sky Atlantic

A Sky executive has responded to criticism of the low audience figures for Mad Men on Sky Atlantic, accusing people of making "misleading conclusions" about the show's popularity on pay-TV.

Season five of the acclaimed drama, poached by Sky from the BBC for the launch of Sky Atlantic in 2011, was seen by an average of 72,000 viewers across its double episode premiere on the Sky exclusive channel on March 27.

Episode one pulled in 98,000 viewers, while episode two slumped to just 45,000. In contrast, the season four premiere on BBC Two was seen by 360,000 last year.

However, Naomi Gibney, the acting director of Sky Atlantic, accused "one or two people" of making "misleading conclusions" about the show's popularity due to the viewing figures.

In a post on the Sky Views blog, Gibney said that Mad Men is available to more than 10m Sky homes, which is around half the amount it could reach on subscription-free TV platform Freeview.

She also said that taking into account the number of people who caught the show in the seven days after transmission via Sky+ or video on-demand service Sky Anytime, it is actually "more popular than ever" on Sky.

"Back when it was on BBC Four, the biggest ever audience for Mad Men in Sky homes was 141,000 viewers (for the very first episode of Season One in 2008)," said Gibney.

"By contrast, the first episode of Season Five was watched by a total of 209,000, an increase of almost 50%. The average for the first three episodes of this series is 142,000, which is 38% up on Season Four in Sky homes. But this isn't about who got more viewers than who. Ultimately it's about creating value for customers."

Echoing the recent statements of Sky1 controller Stuart Murphy, Gibney claimed that Sky+ recording and on-demand have made the "live" premiere for linear TV shows "far less important that once was the case".

She claimed that during Mad Men's latest series, 79% of the total audience had watched the show via 'timeshifted modes on Sky+, Sky Anytime and multiplatform service Sky Go'. The story is similar for other Sky Atlantic shows, such as Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire, she added.

"In other words, audience behaviour is changing dramatically as people take advantage of all the different ways to catch up with their favourites," said Gibney.

"These days, to measure how successful a show is, we need to look at how it is enjoyed across all platforms it's shown on. It's not just us who realises this - the BBC too have recently launched a new measurement system (called Live+7) that does exactly that."

She added: "Anecdotally, we're all aware of the trend for people to stack up episodes on their Sky+ box to enjoy in a single viewing, the same way they might watch a box set.

"We go out of our way to offer all that flexibility to Sky customers because it really doesn't matter to us how they choose to watch - live, on-demand, on the go, or catch-up. So, if some commentators continue to fixate on ratings for linear TV premieres, perhaps it's time for them to catch up too?"

GIbney concluded by saying that Mad Men's popularity should not be judged on how many viewers it gets for each episode, but the passion and devotion of its fans.

She said that serving this audience is what a pay-TV business such as Sky - which is not so reliant on viewing figures for revenue - should be doing.

"The success of Mad Men - and the reason why it is such great TV - has never really been about the size of the audience. There are, and there always will be, many other shows that get more viewers," Gibney said.

"But there are few which inspire the same levels of passion and devotion among their fans. That's why Mad Men makes such sense for a subscription business like Sky.

"We're much more interested in keeping our customers happy and loyal than the audience for a premiere of any single show. For those of us who are hooked on our weekly dose of life at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, nothing comes closer to that goal than Mad Men."

'Only Way Is Essex' Jessica Wright wants 'Xtra Factor' hosting job

The Only Way Is Essex star Jessica Wright has said that she would love to host The Xtra Factor.

The ex-girlband member explained that taking over from Caroline Flack and Olly Murs on the ITV2 spinoff would be her "dream".

Olly Murs and Caroline Flack at The X Factor Birmingham auditions

"I'd love to present The Xtra Factor, that's the dream," Virgin Media quotes her as saying.

"I know about singing and I think I could be good. One day, one day, who knows? I hope it happens."

The reality star also suggested that she could form a presenting duo with brother and former TOWIE co-star Mark Wright.

"I love acting and I'd like to get into presenting," she told Reveal. "Me and Mark could be the new Ant & Dec, couldn't we?

"We've talked about it because we're sort of like the boy and the girl version of each other. It could be quite cool."

Mark, who landed a presenting role on Take Me Out: The Gossip, previously named Ant & Dec as his "heroes".

'The Voice' Australia: Blind teenage singer impresses coaches

A teenage singer who is registered blind has revealed her delight at impressing The Voice Australia's coaches.

Rachael Leahcar, who has lost 90% of her sight as a result of a degenerative disorder, got all four coaches to turn around for her during her performance of 'La Vie en Rose' by Edith Piaf.

Leahcar posted a message of thanks on her official Twitter page, saying: "I laughed, I cried, I answered questions and I followed back... I read every single tweet because they were ALL amazing, and i am TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY by all the support and beautiful, kind words from EVERYBODY!"

She also told the Australian Daily Telegraph that she was "overwhelmed with emotion" by the studio audience's positive reaction.

Delta Goodrem, who Leahcar selected as her coach, said: "Rachael is an extraordinary human being who has a very unique talent - her voice. Her voice left me no other choice but to turn my chair.

Describing the 18-year-old's vocal talents as "truly special", Goodrem added: "Her story is an inspiration."

Leahcar, who counts Pink, Queen and Eva Cassidy among her musical influences on her Facebook page, will appear on A Current Affair this evening (April 17) on the Nine Network.

Hulu Unveils New Shows from Seth Meyers, Adrien Grenier

Hulu Unveils New Shows from Seth Meyers, Adrien Grenier

Adrian Grenier and Seth Meyers are two of the latest Hollywood stars to sign up to do original series on Hulu, as the company on Thursday announced it has picked up four new shows and garnered revenue of $420 million in 2011.

Hulu used the opening day of the first upfronts for digital video to tout its subscriber growth and announce the new shows.

Hulu Plus, its subscription service, now has 2 million paid subscribers, which the company said makes it the fastest-growing paid video service in U.S. history.

It also holds 20 percent of the online video market with viewers watching about 1,000 videos a second, the company reported.

As for the new shows, Meyers, Morgan Spurlock, Grenier and others were there as the online video giant sought to wow advertisers.

Meyers brought Hulu “The Awesomes,” the tale of a superhero and his allies battling villains, the paparazzi and their own reputation for ineptitude. Grenier recast his award-winning documentary “Don’t Quit Your Daydream,” which follows famous musicians looking for “could-have-been musical artists to collaborate on a new song giving them a second-chance at stardom,” for the online portal.

The other two shows are “Flow,” from Michael Wendschuh and “We Got Next.”

Hulu is one of several online portals making a major push into original content, and had already announced shows like "Battleground" from Marc Webb and "A Day in the Life" from Spurlock.

This new take on the upfronts, at which television networks annually court advertising dollars, is the latest sign of the many players entering this field. Netflix, Yahoo and YouTube are among the other major online video destinations making presentations.

'American Idol' Plans Dick Clark Tribute for Thursday Night

'American Idol' Plans Dick Clark Tribute for Thursday Night

Dick Clark may be gone, but he's certainly not forgotten -- especially by Ryan Seacrest.

"American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest -- who took over hosting duties on "New Year's Rockin' Eve" from Clark after the latter's 2004 stroke -- revealed via Twitter on Thursday that "Idol" will honor Clark on tonight's episode.

"We're putting together a tribute for Dick Clark on @AmericanIdol tonight...just talked to @dizzyfeet," Seacrest tweeted, referring to the Twitter handle of "Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe.

Clark, the famed host of "American Bandstand," died Wednesday morning after suffering a heart attack. He was 82.

Following Clark's death, Seacrest tweeted, "I am deeply saddened by the loss of my dear friend Dick Clark. He has truly been one of the greatest influences in my life."

During Wednesday night's "Idol," Seacrest paid further tribute to Clark, starting the episode by noting, "Without Dick, a show like this would not exist. He will be missed greatly and our thoughts and our prayers go out to his family ... I know that he’s in a better place, saying, ‘Hey, let’s get on with the show, OK?’ You got it, boss.”

'ANTM' Makeover: Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel and J. Alexander Leaving

'ANTM' Makeover: Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel and J. Alexander Leaving

Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel and J. Alexander are leaving CW's "America's Next Top Model," where they have helped Tyra Banks find up-and-coming models for years.

All will leave after the current, 18th cycle of the show, which debuted in 2003. The CW declined to comment on a New York Post report that Banks fired all three, and that they were informed Thursday that their contracts would not be renewed.

"Nigel Barker, Jay Manuel and J. Alexander have been an integral part of the ‘America’s Next Top Model’ brand and they helped turn this show into the household name it is today. They have been amazing assets to the show and will always be a part of the ‘Top Model’ family. We will continue to actively work with each of them on future projects,” said Banks and fellow executive producer Ken Mok in a statement.

The move comes as ratings for the show, one of the longest-running on the CW, have slipped. "Top Model," widely known as "ANTM," joined the CW when it succeeded the WB and UPN.

Barker has been a photographer and judge on the show, and the silver-haired Manuel has directed photo shoots. Alexander, nicknamed "Miss Jay," has been a runway coach.

Bravo Developing Male Model Show, Five Others

Bravo Developing Male Model Show, Five Others

Bravo Media is undergoing a surge in original programming, and has added six new projects to its development slate, the company said Thursday.

The projects range from a series revolving around male models to a show that centers on two "infectious" best friends. (Ewww...)

“Bravo is moving full speed ahead to ramp up our diverse development slate and bring our highly engaged audience even more breakthrough original programming,” Eli Lehrer, Vice President of Development for Bravo, said of the half-dozen projects.

"Untitled Male Model Project," which is being produced by Done and Done Productions with Adam DiVello ("The Hills," "The City") serving as executive producer, will follow "some of the most successful men in the world of male modeling [as they] try to make the most of this extremely high paying profession with a very short shelf life."

On "Tone it Up," meanwhile, "two infectious best friends and roommates become the unlikely 'it girls' of the fitness industry after launching their popular Tone It Up website."

Also on the production roster: "The Gold Coast," about a group of women who move back in with their parents on the Gold Coast of Long Island after graduating from New York University; "Heirs of Palm Beach," about privileged offspring of the rich who move in an "elite social scene where membership has its privileges and pitfalls"; "Shop With Stella," in which a trio of pals attempt to launch a start-up fashion website; and "Splitsville," which will center on high-profile divorce lawyers.
