'Britain's Next Top Model': Two girls walk out of show in Dubai

Two girls choose to walk out of Britain & Ireland's Next Top Model in the opening episode tonight (July 9).

Cardiff retail worker Catherine Corry and Southend-on-Sea's Vanessa Cox exit the Sky Living series before the first elimination, unable to cope with the pressure of the reality show.

Host Elle Macpherson announces Catherine's departure to her fellow judges when they arrive for the first photo shoot of the series in Dubai, commenting: "We've had one girl leave, which I'm devastated by as I thought she was fabulous, Catherine.

"She just felt that it was going to be too stressful for her and so she's left us."

Later, Vanessa meets with judges Whitney Port and Tyson Beckford to confirm that she is also withdrawing from the competition.

"I'm missing home, especially my daughter, and it's really hard for me. Everything's getting a bit too much for me and I can't handle it," says Vanessa. "I gave it a go, and it's an amazing experience, but it's just not for me."

Beckford offers sympathy to the departing girl, commenting: "To be a young mother and to be in this industry, it's hard."

The other 18 girls remain in the competition and take part in a Dubai swimwear photo shoot hoping to secure a spot in the Top Model house.

Gold rapped by Ofcom for airing 'Gavin & Stacey' at 10am

UKTV's Gold channel has been warned by Ofcom for airing an episode of Gavin & Stacey at 10am.

The broadcaster edited the James Corden and Ruth Jones sitcom, which originally aired post-9pm on BBC Three in 2007, taking out strong language and sex noises.

However, viewers still complained to Ofcom in February about the rerun's sexually suggestive content.

Viewers' complaints centred on lines such as "I hopes you hungry big boy", "You got any johnnies? I ain't going in there bareback" and "Don't go giving him nothing on the first night... well not nothing... a kiss, a cuddle, a cheeky finger - just don't go selling him the whole farm".

The episode also featured Corden flashing his buttocks in a red lacy thong and language such as "bloody", "s**t", "takes the piss", "pr*ck" and "bugger".

Ofcom ruled: "The overall tone and cumulative impact of the sexual language and references throughout the programme resulted in this material being of a more adult nature and which made this episode unsuitable for scheduling on a Saturday morning.

"The programme included a number of sexual references which were not necessarily sexually explicit but, in Ofcom's view, clearly exceeded comic innuendo and were aimed at a more adult audience.

"The programme included the frequent use of offensive language. This (taken together with the sexual themes and references) underlined that, despite the edits to the original programme, it still contained a considerable amount of content of an adult audience."

Gold has commented on the ruling, insisting that it did everything it could to leave only "mild language and light, oblique sexual references".

Keith Lemon's ITV show 'LemonAid' cleared over puppy giveaway

A show on ITV1 presented by Keith Lemon has been cleared by Ofcom over a competition that attracted more than 200 complaints by offering a puppy as a prize.

A total of 237 viewers contacted media regulator Ofcom about Keith Lemon's LemonAid, saying that the programme had shown an "irresponsible attitude" to animal welfare and pet ownership.

However, Ofcom dismissed the complaints after judging that ITV had taken a number of "very extensive measures" to ensure the welfare of the puppy offered in a competition.

On April 28, ITV1's Saturday early evening show LemonAid featured a giveaway entitled "A Right Dog's Dinner", involving three children accompanied by their parents competing to win a puppy as a prize.

After being contacted by Ofcom about the complaints, ITV said it "regretted" that people had been upset by the competition, but denied that it had shown an "irresponsible" attitude towards animal welfare.

The broadcaster said that it had selected the families involved in the competition carefully to ensure that they were actually considering getting a dog. Checks were carried out on them both before and after the game, said ITV.

An independent and qualified vet checked whether the parents were capable of caring for a puppy, but these checks were not mentioned on the programme as "this was not editorially appropriate in an essentially light-hearted entertainment item of this kind", ITV added.

But on the programme, Lemon did ask the three participants whether they were "serious" about owning a dog and stressed that it was a "big commitment".

All three parents said that they were, with the third adding: "I'm very good with big commitments."

After the pug puppy was shown to the family by celebrity guest Peter Andre, it was returned to the care of the breeder, who then met the winning family to check their suitability as owners.

As there were other puppies in the studio alongside the one being given away, ITV stressed that a full risk assessment had been conducted for their welfare

Despite saying that it was satisfied that the puppy's welfare was protected, ITV acknowledged the viewers' concerns and said that it would be "mindful of this in future programming".

In its ruling today, Ofcom accepted that the competition on LemonAid "may have caused offence to some viewers who object in principle to a puppy being given away as a prize in an entertainment programme".

However, the regulator noted that "at no time was the puppy shown during the broadcast to be in discomfort or distress".

Ofcom welcomed ITV's "extensive measures" to ensure the welfare of the puppy to be given away as a prize, along with the other dogs in the studio at the time.

"Through these measures, in Ofcom's view, the Licensee demonstrated its awareness of, and fulfilled, its obligations to ensure the welfare of all the puppies involved with this programme," said Ofcom.

"The broadcaster therefore applied generally accepted standards to this content so as to ensure that any potential offence was justified by the context."

However, Ofcom said that ITV's decision not to inform viewers about the measures taken to safeguard animal welfare could have contributed to the complaints.

It therefore advised broadcasters intending to run similar animal features in the future to show clear information about welfare to viewers in order to avoid upsetting people.

Dog the Bounty Hunter heading into Celebrity Big Brother?

Duane 'Dog the Bounty Hunter' Chapman is among the stars rumoured to be taking part in the upcoming series of Celebrity Big Brother.

Dog, who found fame with an A&E US reality series following his work as a bounty hunter, has been tapped up to appear in the Channel 5 reality show at the end of the summer, reports The Mirror.

Dog's show was recently axed following eight series on A&E.

Glamour model Rhian Sugden, who was famously involved in a sex text scandal with TV presenter Vernon Kay, Daily Mail favourite Samantha Brick and So Solid Crew star MC Harvey are also being linked to the show.

Ex-Coronation Street actress Julie Goodyear, who played the iconic soap character Bet Lynch, is another surprise name rumoured to be taking part.

Celebrity Big Brother 10 will air immediately after the current run of Big Brother. Channel 5 ordered an extra edition of the celeb series following the ratings success of the Denise Welch and Frankie Cocozza instalment earlier this year.

'Million Pound Drop' ratings continue to rise on Channel 4

The Million Pound Drop Live is enjoying a ratings resurgence on Channel 4, overnight data has shown.

The Davina McCall gameshow climbed to a series high of 1.64m (7.7%) on Friday night between 9pm and 10.30pm, adding 210k (1.2%) on +1.

The programme fell to an all-time low three weeks ago, when 1.36m viewers watched the eighth run opener.

Though signs suggest the format isn't yet running out of steam, its figures are still a fair distance away from its 2.5m peak in 2010.

Friday's Million Pound Drop had a lead-in of just 875k (4%) from Come Dine with Me, which added 213k (1%) on timeshift.

Meanwhile on Channel 5, Arron Lowe's Big Brother eviction was seen by 1.56m (7.2%) in the 9pm hour, then 1.21m (8.3%) watched the axed contestant's interview with Brian Dowling.

Spencer Matthews's Bachelor entertained 705k (3.6%) in the lucrative 10pm slot sandwiched between the reality show, while Ice Road Truckers had 995k (4.5%) in the 8pm hour.

Vernon Kay's Let's Get Gold could only attract 2.16m (9.9%) versus 3.87m (17.9%) for BBC One's New Tricks repeat, despite the fact ITV had a far greater inheritance from Coronation Street. Would I Lie To You?, in contrast, amused 2.87m (12.9%).

Elsewhere, BBC Two's coverage of the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2012 dazzled 1.92m (8.9%), after which 1.04m (5%) watched the latest Episodes at 10pm.

Overall, BBC One claimed a rare Friday primetime victory over ITV1 with 20.4% against 17.8% (+1: 0.5%). BBC Two secured third place with 7%, ahead of Channel 4's 5.2% (+1: 0.9%), and Channel 5's 4.3% (+1: 0.1%).

Big Brother: Ofcom will investigate Conor McIntyre complaints

Ofcom is investigating complaints made from viewers about aggressve behaviour and alleged racist abuse in Channel 5's latest series of Big Brother.

The TV watchdog has picked up over 1,225 complaints about three incidents, including Conor McIntyre's abusive comments about Miss India UK Deana Uppal.

Conor's explicit rant about Deana, which included a suggestion that he would "punch" her, aired on June 25 and picked up the majority of the complaints (1,108).

The Northern Irish housemate apologised to Big Brother about his comments and Channel 5 claimed that they would be taking no further action about the incident.

Other complaints were made about Caroline Wharram referring to fellow housemate Adam Kelly as a "ridiculous gorilla... with no sanitation".

Three complaints were made about former housemate Victor Ebuwa's comments on spinoff show Bit on the Side when he used the term "functioning retards" to describe the housemates.

A rep for Channel 5 said: "Channel 5 is committed to complying with Ofcom's broadcasting code and will help to facilitate a speedy investigation into this particular episode of Big Brother and Big Brother's Bit on the Side."

Channel 5's excuse for not punishing Conor at the time was that his comments were "out of character".

Legal Fight Over Dish's Auto Hop Set for California

A New York federal judge says the fight over Dish Networks' new ad-skipping Auto Hop feature will play out in California.

Dish sued over Auto Hop in New York on May 24, the same day CBS, NBC and Fox sued in California. That created a dispute over which venue should handle the case. The judge's ruling Monday points to California -- though the dispute will partially continue in New York.

ABC did not sue in California, but rather filed a counter claim against Dish in New York. Because of that, U.S. District Court Judge Laura Taylor Swain said the ABC-related aspects of the case would be allowed to proceed in New York.

Fox welcome the news that the arguments would be heard mostly in California, which is part of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

"We are pleased that the court has determined that Fox, as the true victim and plaintiff here, should have the right to proceed in its chosen forum in the 9th Circuit," Fox said in a statement.

The networks contend that Auto Hop -- which allows viewers to watch previously aired primetime network shows without ads -- is a threat to ad-sponsored television. But Dish says the technology is just a more advanced version of fast forwarding.

Fox said the ruling on venue would allow the parties to address the fundamental questions of the case.

"Now we move on to the real issue at hand – demonstrating that Dish Network has created and marketed a product with the clear goal of breaching its license with Fox, violating copyrights and destroying the fundamental underpinnings of the broadcast television business -- which damages not only Fox and the other major networks, but also the hundreds of local stations around the country.  We look forward to trying and winning the case on its merits."

The networks accuse Dish of copyright infringement in their claims against the satellite cable provider. Dish sued seeking a declaratory judgment that Auto Hop does not infringe on their copyrights.

Dish said in a statement Monday it would "stand behind consumers and their right to skip commercials, something they have been doing since the invention of the remote control.”

“Regardless of the venue, we look forward to proceeding with this case, recognizing that it has been 28 years since the Supreme Court’s “Betamax” decision held that a viewer, in the privacy of their home, could record a television show to watch later," Dish general counsel R. Stanton Dodge said. "The Court ruled that ‘time-shifting’ constituted a fair use of copyrighted television programming. Those Betamax users could permissibly fast-forward through commercials on recorded shows – just as DVR users do today."

Big Brother latest nominations announced

Conor Mcintyre and Shievonne Robinson have been nominated for this week's Big Brother eviction.

Channel 5 confirmed earlier this evening that the two housemates will be up for the public vote ahead of Friday's elimination show.

A twist in this week's 'Turf War' task meant that only Adam Kelly, Deana Uppal, Becky Hannon, Luke Scrase and Scott Mason were allowed to nominate.

Shievonne and Adam had earlier clashed after she witnessed him calling her "fake" during the 'Turf War' task.

Conor has also hinted that he may decide to voluntarily leave the house in the near future.

Reactions to this week's vote will be shown on tonight's (July 9) episode of Big Brother's Bit on the Side at 10pm on 5*.

Voting for this week's eviction is now open online via the Channel 5 website.

Simon Cowell ex Jasmine Lennard for Celebrity Big Brother?

Jasmine Lennard is the latest person to be linked with the next series of Celebrity Big Brother.

The model is alleged to have had an affair with Simon Cowell for six months while he was with Terri Seymour in 2006.

Producers are said to be offering Lennard a deal to join the show after the affair revelations were recently detailed in Tom Bower's tell-all biography of Cowell.

"The Cowell biography has given Jasmine another spell in the spotlight," a source told The Sun.

"She's quite a feisty girl so will be great in the Big Brother house."

Lennard first appeared on TV screens on Rachel Hunter's Make Me A Supermodel, before reports of the affair broke out.

She also reportedly has a tattoo of Cowell's initials on her arm.

In 2010, Cowell denied reports that Lennard's newborn child was in fact his, after she refused to name the father at the time.

Dog the Bounty Hunter, journalist Samantha Brick and So Solid Crew member MC Harvey are among the stars to be linked with the next Channel 5 reality series.

Showtime Names New Heads of Advertising, Marketing

Showtime has named Susan Frank and Emily Gould as the co-heads of its marketing and advertising departments.

Both will have the title of vice president, program marketing and advertising.

"The combined wealth of experience between Susan and Emily is unmatched," said Donald Buckley, executive vice president of program marketing, media, promotions and digital services, to whom they will report. "They have successfully spearheaded the marketing campaigns for six consecutive hit freshman series for this network, and manage a team that has a deep bench of talent."

Frank, a 13-year Showtime veteran, previously serced as senior director of program marketing and advertising. Among her jobs has been serving as brand manager of "Dexter" since its premiere in 2006. She has also led the network's San Diego Comic-Con efforts for the past seven years.

In seven years at Showtime, Gould, who previously served as senior director of program marketing and advertising, has led marketing and ad campaigns for shows including "Homeland," "Shameless" and "House of Lies."

Demi Lovato to Host Teen Choice Awards

Demi Lovato is getting warmed up for her "X Factor" gig by hosting the Teen Choice Awards.

The "Skyscraper" songbird, who is joining the Fox singing competition for its second season, will also host the Teen Choice Awards on Fox.

Fox also announced Monday that Cat Deeley, host of its dating show "The Chocie," has been added to the list of Teen Choice talent.

Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen, Flo Rida and No Doubt are performing. "Jersey Shore" star DJ Pauly D will DJ. And Miley Cyrus, Zooey Deschanel, Ellen DeGeneres and Zac Efron are among the previously announced talent.

"Teen Choice 2012" will air live July 22. Fans can vote for at the ceremony's web site until 11:59 p.m. the previous night.

Lovato, who is currently touring the U.S., will premiere as an "X Factor" judge, along with fellow new addition Britney Spears, when the show returns on Wednesday, Sept. 12.

Simon Cowell can have DJ 'X Factor', says Greg Wilson

Greg Wilson has said that he does not mind if Simon Cowell makes a reality TV show about DJing.

The spinner, who made his name in the early 1980s at Wigan Pier and Manchester's Legend, told Digital Spy that he was not concerned about Cowell's plans for a DJ programme.

"I can't see the excitement of watching a DJ," Wilson said. "What do they want? Somebody to put their hands in the air and dance about behind it? It doesn't sound to me like it would make good TV.

"DJ culture in the past 25 years has just gone through the roof. In a sense my attitude to it is let 'em have it, let 'em take it, let's build again from the basics. It's gone so big, it's gone so overground.

"Going back in time, for me it was always about the music, it was a real passion for music, a love of music... entertaining an audience - you have the music and it's up to you."

He added: "As a good DJ you're learning to see how an audience works, how to work with that audience - it's a reciprocal situation.

"One of the things that got lost along the way for some people is that DJs began to see themselves as above the audiences. That they were the arbiters of what music was, when really it's all an individual thing.

Alexander Armstrong, Emma Willis for new game show 'Prize Island'

Alexander Armstrong and Emma Willis have signed up to co-host a new ITV game show.

Prize Island will see four couples battling it out in an exotic setting in order to win £50,000, reports The Sun.

The contestants will be tested on their own relationships, while having to prove their skills in a series of tasks.

The couples will take part in four rounds of challenges, before making their way to the final stage 'Buried Treasure', which contains a new car with the prize money locked inside.

Armstrong said of the show: "Prize Island is inventive, funny, compelling, oh, and set on a tropical island with prizes!"

Willis added: "I am beyond excited to be one of the presenters of Prize Island. It promises to be a show like no other where contestants win unbelievable prizes."

ITV has previously dabbled with tropical settings with their dating reality show Celebrity Love Island six years ago.

Prize Island is scheduled to air in 2013 on ITV1.

Pointless presenter Armstrong revealed earlier this year that he turned down the chance to host Countdown.

New Comedy Central Unit to Focus on Merchandise, Video, Downloads, Touring

Comedy Central announced the creation of Comedy Central Enterprises, a new division that will focus on consumer products, home video, CDs and digital downloads, publishing, and live touring.

Comedy Central Michele Ganeless also announced that Mitch Fried has been promoted to the new position of executive vice president of Comedy Central Enterprises. He was formerly senior vice president of Comedy Central Live Entertainment.

“In the increasingly fractured world of content distribution, success today means reaching fans everywhere. The formation of Comedy Central Enterprises strengthens our relationship with our fans.  It’s another example of the kind of extension that keeps Comedy Central the #1 brand in comedy,” said Ganeless.

Nickelodeon Sets Premiere Date For Their Revival Of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Did you know that Nickelodeon has a reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coming soon? I sure didn't. I guess I don't pay enough attention to news about children's programming. Anyway, yet another re-do of TMNT is coming this fall.

For any readers unfamiliar with the franchise, TMNT follows a group of four baby pet turtles that are flushed in to the sewer. Down in the depths, they are exposed to toxic waste. This somehow causes the four reptiles to grow to human size (along with a sewer rat that was also contaminated), develop martial arts skills, and fight Shredder and his criminal gang known as the "Foot Clan". The turtles also cultivate a friendship with intrepid human reporter April O'Neill. It's outlandish I know, but when you're a kid, you kind of just go with it. I know I sure did during the show's original run in the late 80's and early 90's.

The Nickelodeon version will feature a few cosmetic changes, but the basic premise and character line-up remains intact. The official network release sells the show as "Funnier and with more Ninjutsu than ever before, the show will explore the companionship of four teenage brothers learning to rely on themselves and one another as they unravel the mystery of their existence and grow to become the heroes in a half-shell that they are destined to be.”

The voice cast is as follows: American Pie's Jason Biggs as Leonardo, Lord Of The Rings' Sean Astin as Raphael, Teen Titan's Greg Cipes as Michelangelo, Rob Paulsen as Donatello (he also voiced the character in the original Turtles series), Parenthood's Mae Whitman as April, Hoon Lee as Master Splinter, and lastly Kevin Michael Richardson as the villainous Shredder.

The first season will consist of 26 half-hour episodes, and will premiere on Saturday, September 19th at 11am EST. It's nice to know that some places still show cartoons on Saturday mornings, even if they're not on as early as they used to be.

FX Reveals Why It Turned Down Breaking Bad

Did you know that AMC's hit crime drama Breaking Bad wasn't originally pitched to AMC? Yep, it turns out that what is arguably AMC's signature original series (it's either BB or Mad Men) wasn't originally headed for the network. In fact, series creator Vince Gilligan originally attempted to sell the pilot to none other than FX in 2007.

Some of you might be wondering why FX would turn down a show that's dark tone would have fit so perfectly with its then line-up of shows such as The Shield, Nip/Tuck, and Rescue Me. Well, wonder no more, as FX President John Landgraf explained the logic behind the network's decision in a recent radio interview -

"We had three dramas with male antiheroes and we looked at that script and said, ‘Okay, so here’s a fourth male antihero. The question was: ‘Are we defining FX as the male antihero network and is that a big enough tent?"

So, the basic reasoning here is that Breaking Bad was just too much like FX's other series of the time, and the network didn't want to be typecast as only supplying one type of show. This statement becomes a bit ironic in hindsight when you consider shows like Sons Of Anarchy, and Justified that have premiered on FX since they rejected Breaking Bad. You can't tell me that the lead characters on those shows aren't very much anti-heroes. It could even be argued that Louis C.K. is kind of the "anti-hero" of Louie as well.

Landgraf continued - "Look, it was a wonderful script. If I had known Vince Gilligan was going to be one of the best showrunners in television, and Breaking Bad was going to be literally one of the very best shows in television, I would have picked it up despite the concept. But the truth of the matter is anybody who does what I do for a living, who’s honest, will tell you that you’re making decisions based on too little information all the time, and you make good ones and you make bad ones."

Now, that seemed like a pretty honest answer. You win some, you lose some. I have no doubts that FX stills feel regret about the choice they made, but hey, they ended up doing well for themselves even without Walter White.
