'Smash' Gets a New Showrunner: 'Gossip Girl's' Josh Safran

'Smash' Gets a New Showrunner: 'Gossip Girl's' Josh Safran

A loss for "Gossip Girl" is a gain for "Smash."

"GG" showrunner Josh Safran will take over as the showrunner for its musical drama, which has been up and down in the ratings during its first season, NBC has announced.

Safran, who has worked on the CW's "Gossip Girl" since 2008, will take over the "Smash" duties from series creator Theresa Rebeck, who stepped down in March. NBC last month renewed the backstage-Broadway-themed series for a second season.

Rebeck, who wrote the first three episodes of "Smash," is a Broadway playwright who based the show's lead character, Julia (Debra Messing), on herself. Rebeck will remain with the show as an executive producer and writer.

Meanwhile, Safran's departure leaves another question mark on the future of "Gossip Girl," which has yet to be renewed for a sixth season.

The show, which often drew more than three million viewers during its second season, drew under one million for its most recent new episode on April 23.

SyFy Plans Haunted Real Estate Show -- Plus Stephen King, 'Adjustment Bureau' Projects

SyFy Plans Haunted Real Estate Show -- Plus Stephen King, 'Adjustment Bureau' Projects

SyFy announced a new scripted video game tie-in and six new reality shows, plus a development slate of 28 new projects that include an "Adjustment Bureau" series, shows based on Stephen King and Charlaine Harris novels, and a reality series about trying to sell haunted houses.

The network announces its lineup at its upfront presentation to advertisers Tuesday.

The new series "Defiance," expected to premiere next year, will debut at the same time as Trion’s video game. It stars Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Tony Curran, Jaime Murray, Fionnula Flanagan, Mia Kirshner and Oscar nominee Graham Greene as survivors of a universal war. It will be directed by Scott Stewart "Legion" and written/executive produced by Rockne O’Bannon ("Farscape"), Kevin Murphy ("Desperate Housewives," "Caprica") and Michael Taylor ("Battlestar Galactica." Murphy will be the showrunner of the series, produced by Universal Cable Productions.

The network's upcoming reality shows include six new series, three of them about hauntings: "School Sprits," "Paranormal Highway," and "Ghost Mine" are about paranormal activity in schools, highways, and a mine. "Collection Intervention" is about couples divided by obsessive collecting, and the competition "Viral Video Showdown" pits one video against another. "Hot Set" stages faceoffs between Hollywood production designers.

Scripted projects in development include adaptations of popular works by Stephen King ("Eyes of the Dragon"), John Christopher ("The Lotus Caves") and Charlaine Harris ("Grave Sight"), as well as shows based on the movie "The Adjustment Bureau" and the DC comic Booster Gold, about a futuristic athlete who returns to modern times in search of fame and fortune.

And watch out, HGTV: "Buyer Beware" is about the difficulty of selling homes that may be packed with ghosts. Another reality show, "Jersey Shore" producer SallyAnn Salsano's "Fan Girl/Fan Boy Project," focuses on hardcore but often misunderstood fans.

Here's the list of new and planned shows, as described by SyFy:

Rosie O'Donnell Slams Casting Lindsay Lohan as Elizabeth Taylor

Rosie O'Donnell Slams Casting Lindsay Lohan as Elizabeth Taylor

Think Lindsay Lohan is a terrible choice to play screen icon Elizabeth Taylor? You're not alone -- Rosie O'Donnell is right there with you.

O'Donnell -- whose talk show on OWN was recently axed -- did a guest stint on NBC's "Today" Tuesday, as a guest panelist on the show's "Today's Professionals" segment. One of the hot topics up for discussion? Lohan's upcoming portrayal of Taylor in the Lifetime biopic "Liz & Dick."

O'Donnell made it unmistakably clear that Lohan -- who has recently been trying to keep herself on the straight and narrow, after a prolonged period of personal trouble -- doesn't belong anywhere near the role.

"[S]he's had a lot of trouble doing every single movie, including 'SNL,'" O'Donnell said, referring to Lohan's guest-hosting stint last month on "Saturday Night Live." "She was out and not at rehearsal. I think she's not in a place to work."

O'Donnell added, " I don't think she's right for the role and I don't think she's capable at this point of doing what's needed to portray that character."

Lohan's spokesman blasted O'Donnell's comments in a statement provided to TheWrap, saying, "I think Rosie should be focused on her own career right now and not everyone else's. It's a shame she has to be so cruel towards another person in order to keep herself in the news."

When regular "Today's Professionals" panelist Donny Deutsch suggested that Lohan might be the Elizabeth Taylor of the current generation, O'Donnell shot back, "You're out of your mind."

Fellow "Today's Professionals" regular Star Jones suggested that "Liz & Dick" would attract viewers due to Lohan's "train wreck" factor, O'Donnell suggested otherwise, saying, "the interest level in her has waned ... On 'SNL' it wasn't as though she delivered. People watched expecting, hoping, wishing, but she needs a lot of help."

will.i.am: 'Voice UK live show as nervewracking as Super Bowl'

will.i.am: 'Voice UK live show as nervewracking as Super Bowl'

will.i.am has claimed that he's as nervous about tomorrow night's Voice UK live show as he was when he played with the Black Eyed Peas at the Super Bowl halftime show.

The singer also compared his nerves to the first time he toured with the Peas and when he played concerts in Brazil at the opening of the football World Cup,

Writing on Twitter, the singer and producer said: "I'm nervous for the first live battles.

"I haven't been this nervous since we played a concert in Brazil in front of 1.5million people."

He continued: "The second time I was this nervous is when we opened the World Cup in South Africa and a billion people watched on TV.

"The 3rd time I was this nervous is when we played the Super Bowl in America and more than 200million people watched on TV.

"The 4th time I was this nervous is when I had to ask my mum for permission to go on tour in 98...I was afraid she would say no."

will.i.am's five acts - Joelle Moses, Sophie Griffin, Jaz Ellington, Frances Wood and Tyler James - will all perform in the live show tomorrow night (April 28). One of them will be voted out of the competition in Sunday's results show.

'Britain's Got Talent' Malakai's mum: 'He'll cope just fine'

'Britain's Got Talent' Malakai's mum: 'He'll cope just fine'

Britain's Got Talent star Malakai Paul will cope with the pressure of the show, according to his mum Toni Ann.

The 9-year-old, who said he was inspired to audition by former contestants Shaheen Jafargholi and Diversity, broke down in tears during his performance of Beyoncé's 'Listen' on last night's show (April 28).

"Obviously as his mum I felt very emotional watching him cry but I knew it was nothing more than a bit of stage fright and nerves as he had never performed in front of that many people before," Toni Ann told ITV.

Asked if she had regrets, she continued: "No, not at all. It's something he's always wanted to do. He auditioned for Britain's Got Talent two years ago and didn't get through to see the judges, so ever since then he's been saying, 'Mummy I want to go back', so I just supported him all the way.

"He loves singing and he loves his music. I'm not going to stop him; I'm going to support him all the way. I think he will cope just fine as he has a very strong network behind him. Not only does he have our family but a very strong network of support from his school.

"We all want to keep him grounded and happy. Lots and lots of practice will help him overcome nerves. I've always sung since I was little, it's something I've always loved doing. We're a very musical family."

Malakai revealed he has been singing in front of as many people as he can to avoid being overcome by nerves during his next performance.

"My mum inspires me to sing," he said. "I wasn't that nervous until I got to the side of the stage. I don't know why I got nervous as there was a good crowd there and they were all clapping and cheering for me. The judges were really nice to me too.

"['Listen' is] special to me because the song says to me in the words - "My time has come for my dreams to be heard" - so it makes me want to follow my dreams which are to win Britain's Got Talent and to go on to be a recording artist and to sell albums and work with lots of other big artists like Beyoncé."

'The Voice' vs. 'American Idol': Who's the Social Media Champ?

'The Voice' vs. 'American Idol': Who's the Social Media Champ?

"The Voice" has proven to be a formidable foe to the formerly untouchable "American Idol" on the ratings front. But how do the two shows compare when it comes to social media?

Advertising Age recently teamed with social-media monitoring firm Trendrr in an effort to determine which show is creating the most buzz in the social-media world. And while the results aren't entirely conclusive (and quite possibly not entirely scientific), it appears that NBC's "The Voice" is coming out ahead.

Looking at Twitter and Facebook conversations, as well as check-ins at GetClue and Miso, Trendrr calculated that "The Voice" has generated 21 percent more social activity per episode on average this season,

Looking at their entire seasons so far, though, "The Voice" has been averaging 21 percent more social activity per episode than "Idol." And it seems that "The Voice" has the bigger momentum on the social-media front: Season 2 of "The Voice" has averaged 30 percent more social-media activity per episode than it did for its maiden season, versus just a 10 percent gain over last season for "Idol."

Oddly, "Idol" started the season with an advantage: The Jan. 18 premiere of the show's 11th season amassed 39 percent more social-media activity than the Season 2 premiere of "The Voice" on Feb. 12.

As far as Twitter followers are concerned, the two shows are fairly even, with "The Voice"'s 538,000 followers narrowly besting 516,000 for "Idol." "Idol," however, rules Facebook, with 8,835,000 likes, compared to 2,614,000 for "The Voice."

Social-media activity for both shows is nearly identical when divided along gender lines; "Idol" activity is 65 percent female 35 percent male, while "The Voice" has a 69 percent female to 31 percent male split.

'Drop Dead Diva' Gets Return Date With Kim Kardashian Episode

Lifetime's "Drop Dead Diva" is returning to the airwaves in June -- and it's bringing Kim Kardashian along with it.

The show's fourth, 13-episode season will kick off June 3 at 9 p.m. with a season premiere featuring reality TV queen Kim Kardashian, who's beginning a multiple-episode run with the show.

The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star will have a recurring role this season as Nikki LePree, a famed relationship guru (something of an irony, given Kardashian's track record on that front) who Stacy turns to for advice after her former flame Fred moves on with a new love interest.

Other guest stars for the season include Serena Williams, Brandy Norwood, Patty Duke, Valerie Harper and former "Cheers" star John Ratzenberger, who will hopefully regale the cast with useless trivia of suspect accuracy.

In addition to the guest stars, "Drop Dead Diva" has added two regular cast members this season, Carter MacIntyre and Lex Medlin.

"Drop Dead Diva" tells the story of a shallow wannabe model who dies in a sudden accident only to find her soul resurfacing in the body of a brilliant, plus-size and recently deceased attorney, Jane. The upcoming season begins with Jane vacationing in Italy while her firm flounders back at home under the leadership of a colleague.

Watch 56 Episodes of 'Star Trek' at the Same Time, With Sound

Ever wanted to watch two seasons worth of the original "Star Trek" series at once? Sure, it seems, as Spock would say, illogical, but thanks to an ambitious Trekkie on YouTube, one 50-minute YouTube clip will unspool 56 "Trek" episodes at the same time, with sound.

The video, compiled by YouTube user twilight1138, features the complete first and second seasons of the 1966-69 series, with one exception: Blastr.com points out twilight1138 swapped the first episode of season three in for the first episode for season one, in the interest of episode length parity.

Here's hoping twilight1138 puts his episode collage design to work on those 20 seasons of "Law & Order" we'd love to watch someday. And that no one who watches this has a seizure.

'Game of Thrones' Aidan Gillen in BBC thriller 'Mayday'

'Game of Thrones' Aidan Gillen in BBC thriller 'Mayday'

Game of Thrones star Aidan Gillen has been cast in new BBC One thriller Mayday.

The actor, who plays Littlefinger in the HBO series, will appear alongside the likes of Sophie Okonedo, Peter Firth and Lesley Manville in the five-part drama from the writers of Whitechapel.

Mayday focuses on the disappearance of a young girl from an idyllic community, which prompts neighbours and friends to suspect each other of wrongdoing.

Gillen will portray a single father named Everitt, while Okonedo has been cast as a mother-turned-spy. Firth will star as a community leader, with Manville playing his wife.

Ben Stephenson, controller, BBC Drama Commissioning, said: "[Writers] Ben Court and Caroline Ip have crafted a gripping thriller that takes us behind the scenes of a murder and examines the impact a devastating crime has on an ordinary neighbourhood."

Jane Featherstone, chief executive of Mayday producers Kudos Film and Television, said: "Mayday has attracted a brilliant cast and takes an original look at a familiar story.

"There are no police incident rooms, autopsies or crime scene investigations, instead this is about a town facing the reality that the killer is among them, one of them."

Mayday is directed by Black Mirror's Brain Welsh and produced by Chris Fry of Spooks.

BBC defends 'Silent Witness' violence after complaints

BBC defends 'Silent Witness' violence after complaints

The BBC has defended the inclusion of violent scenes in BBC One's Silent Witness, after almost 500 viewers complained about the programme last weekend.

The post-watershed episode of Silent Witness aired last Sunday and featured prison officer Daniel Kessler, played by Lee Gregory, savagely beating and then sodomising an inmate on the floor of a toilet block.

Around 6.1m people watched the episode on April 22 while around 4.7m tuned in for the second part on the following day. Both episodes carried a warning about their violent and potentially upsetting scenes.

But 483 people have complained to the BBC about the "too violent" nature of the sex attack scene. Media regulator Ofcom has received a further 35 complaints, and viewers also used online message boards to express their discontent.

Writing on the Digital Spy forums on April 23, one viewer said: "Last night's sodomising incident was a bit too graphic for me."

Another wrote: "I love Silent Witness and am not shy to a nice gritty drama...but i have to say that scene in the toilet with the guy being violently sodomized by the dodgy policeman went too far.

"It's been playing on my mind since i watched it and that doesn't ever happen to me..and I watch all sorts of hard dramas etc..

"[I am] surprised that they put it in really as we were already told about the incident when Harry saw the photos. That was enough to get the point across. quite disturbing indeed."

Another viewer added: "I don't want this series to turn into one of those dreadful torture porn dramas we see elsewhere on television."

In a statement, the BBC said that it takes its responsibility to the audience "extremely seriously" and always tries to "strike the right balance between compelling drama without being unnecessarily graphic".

"Towards the end of the first episode we had established that DI Bridges and Officer Kessler had previously worked together and that he was the one very much in control," said the corporation.

"The final scene was not an attempt to gratuitously shock the audience; it was rooted in character and research, showing just what DI Bridges was prepared to do for her colleague for the sake of her family, as well as the brutality that Kessler was capable of.

"We acknowledge that certain scenes may have been challenging, but we filmed and presented them in such a way as to make sure that although as a viewer the implication was there, it was never actually shown."

The BBC added that Silent Witness, now into its 15th series, is well known for its "general tone and content".

"It's fair to say the show is known for tackling challenging stories and exploring adult themes and we don't feel the content of these episodes would have gone beyond viewer's expectations," the corporation said.

"As well as scheduling the series after the 9pm watershed, we made sure the content was widely publicised and gave a warning before both episodes."

ITV1, BBC Three out to retain crowns at 'Channel of the Year' awards

ITV1, BBC Three out to retain crowns at 'Channel of the Year' awards

The Edinburgh International TV Festival has announced the shortlists for the 2012 'Channel of the Year' Awards, including The Voice UK and Got to Dance going head-to-head for the multi-platform prize.

'Terrestrial Channel of the Year' will see ITV1 attempt to retain its 2011 crown ahead of BBC One, BBC Two, Channel 4 and Channel 5.

BBC Four, BBC Three, E4, ITV2 and Sky1 HD are in the running for 'Digital Channel of the Year', which was won last year by BBC Three.

The 'Cross Platform Innovation' award celebrates television shows which have demonstrated particular excellence in multi-platform or online extensions, such as games.

Sky's Got to Dance Online and BBC One's The Voice UK Online will vie for the award, alongside Channel 4's The Bank Job Head To Head Game and Embarrassing Bodies Live From The Clinic.

Last year's award was picked up by Channel 4's Million Pound Drop play-along game, created by Endemol Games.

Hit BBC talent show The Voice UK, currently airing its first series in Britain, is also up for 'Terrestrial Programme of the Year'.

The 'Producer or Director Debut' will go to either Grace Reynolds for Educating Essex, Dan Albion for Watch series Dynamo: Magician Impossible or Richard Senior, the director of Doctor Who episode 'Let's Kill Hitler'.

Big Talk, TalkBack, The Garden, Twofour and Wall to Wall will compete for the 'Indie of the Year' award.

The winners will be announced at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival, which runs from August 23 to 25 in the Scottish capital.

Chloe Sevigny Joins 'American Horror Story' for Season 2

Chloe Sevigny Joins 'American Horror Story' for Season 2

Ryan Murphy's sophomore season of "American Horror Story" may boil down to a battle at the insane asylum.

"Big Love" alum Chloe Sevigny will join the cast as a character who butts heads with a mental institution leader played by season returnee Jessica Lange, FX has confirmed to TheWrap.

Sevigny will play Shelly the Nymphomaniac, a bitter rival of Lange, who won Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for her role as Constance Langdon on the show's first season but plays a new character in season two.

"AHS" writers created the role of Shelly with Sevigny in mind, EW.com reports, and she'll be joined in the new season by previously announced cast members Lange, Zachary Quinto, "The Voice" judge and Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Lizzie Brocheré and Lily Rabe.

Murphy has said that season two, which begins production this summer, will be set in the East Coast asylum for the criminally insane.
