Torchwood hasn't been cancelled, says Russell T Davies

Russell T Davies has revealed that Torchwood has not been cancelled.

During an interview on BBC's The Graham Norton Show, the writer and producer said that the series is in "a nice limbo".

"I loved making it over there [in the US], and I would have carried on if circumstances hadn't brought me back to this country, so it's kind of in limbo for me at the moment," he explained.

"I'm not working on it at the moment. I'm only working on [new children's TV show] Wizards vs Aliens - when I get back to work one day, I don't know, it'll be old news to the BBC!"

He added: "It's not officially [cancelled]. It's in a nice limbo where it can stew - those shows can come back in ten, 20 years time."

Davies's comments echo those of star John Barrowman and executive producer Julie Gardner, who also described the show as being "in limbo" last autumn.

Barrowman said: "We've pushed the pause button now because we don't know what's happening. It's beyond my control."

"[Torchwood] has been across so many different channels and so many international audiences, across so many different story structures, and so many numbers of episodes," said Gardner.

"There's no single way forward for the show."

'Up All Night' Takes a Page From 'Happy Days'

"Up All Night" is switching from a single camera to multicam format, making a transition formerly made by the classic sitcom "Happy Days."

The series, which stars Christina Applegate and Will Arnett as harried new parents and Maya Rudolph as Applegate's self-absorbed boss, will shut down for three months after taping its final single-camera episode next week. It will use that time to convert its stage and set for the show to be recorded in front of a live audience with multiple cameras.

It will go back into production in February on five multi-camera episodes, bringing the total number of episodes for this season to 16.

All of the season's 11 remaining single-camera episodes will air by December, and the multicam episodes will return in April or May. The show has earned only passable ratings since debuting last season.

There was no word on what will fill the show's 8:30 Thursday timeslot in the interim, but NBC has "Community" in its bullpen. The planned Friday debut for "Community" was delayed earlier this month.

The series' creator, Emily Spivey, is a veteran of the three-camera format thanks to her work on "Saturday Night Live." Showrunner Tucker Cawley worked previously on the multicam "Everybody Loves Raymond." NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said the network and executive producer Lorne Michaels agreed the format change would "infuse the show with
more energy."

"We know what the multi-camera audience does for the live episodes of '30 Rock,' plus after seeing both Maya and Christina do SNL within the past few months, we knew we had the kind of performers -- Will Arnett included -- who love the reaction from a live audience," Greenblatt said. "We think we can make a seamless tradition to the new format. Also, we're committed to the multi-camera form and this will give us another show to consider for next season in this new format."

NBC pointed to "Happy Days" as a precedent for the shift. The show's first two seasons were filmed using a single-camera setup and laugh track, but one episode of Season 2 ("Fonzie Gets Married") was filmed in front of a studio audience with three cameras as a test
run.

From the third season on, the show was shot with three cameras. Tom Bosley or another cast member would usually inform viewers that it was filmed in front of a live audience.

'X Factor' First Live Show Bumped Up After Early World Series Win

Major League Baseball has once again shaken up the schedule for "The X Factor."

Fox's singing competition will hold its first live show of the season early, due to the early wrap-up of the 2012 World Series, which saw the San Francisco Giants sweep the Detroit Tigers four games to zero.

The first live show of the season will now air Oct. 31. It will be a special two-hour, seven-minute episode that will begin at 8 p.m. ET. It will air at 8 PT on a tape delay.

The scheduling change also means that new hosts Khloe Kardashian and Mario Lopez will be making their debuts earlier than expected. They will replace "X Factor" host Steve Jones with the Oct. 31 episode. Jones was ousted after the first season.

Thursday's episode will feature the reveal of the top finalists, with the audience voting on the finalists next week.

Earlier this month, a rain delay of the National League Championship created chaos for Fox's schedule. After originally hearing that the delay was likely to continue past primetime, Fox began airing "The X Factor," but when the delay was canceled about an hour later, the network pulled back "The X Factor" feed to switch to the game. However, a delay in the switch also caused "The Mindy Show" to briefly air for some viewers.

'Elementary, '30 Rock' halt filming due to Hurricane Sandy

Production of TV shows based in New York is to be affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The vast hurricane - currently closing in on areas of the US East Coast - has brought filming on the likes of Elementary and 30 Rock to a halt.

Public transport in New York, Washington DC and Philadelphia has also been suspended and the New York Stock Exchange shut, while thousands have already evacuated New York City.

Other shows affected by the extreme weather include Showtime's Nurse Jackie and CBS series The Good Wife and Person of Interest, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Comedian Louis CK - star of FX series Louie - cancelled a stand-up show in New York City on Sunday (October 28) amid fears for the safety of the audience, while Jimmy Kimmel Live! is currently expected to tape this week's shows in Brooklyn as planned in spite of Hurricane Sandy

'X Factor' Lucy Spraggan 'tired of being told off', threatens to quit?

Lucy Spraggan is not entirely happy on The X Factor and has threatened to quit the show, it has been claimed.

The 21-year-old singer is reportedly upset because she does not want to keep singing cover versions on the show. Spraggan auditioned with her own material, and also performed original track 'Mountains' during the first live show of the series.

"Lucy might quit - she's tired of being told off," an insider claimed to The Mirror. "She doesn't want to sing covers. She was loving it but she's unwell, which is making her negative."

The insider also claimed that Spraggan wants to "be paid for the songs which she wrote that are selling on iTunes".

However, a show spokesperson has insisted that Spraggan "is very happy show-wise", while another source claimed that she is simply "still feeling unwell".

The X Factor has claimed in an official statement that "Lucy is committed to the show and is hoping to return to perform this coming weekend".

Spraggan was excused from performing this week as she had flu and was too ill to sing.

Derren Brown 'Apocalypse' star revealed as fake?

Derren Brown's latest TV project is facing allegations of fakery after its star was reportedly revealed to be an actor.

The illusionist's new Channel 4 show Apocalypse features Brown attempting to convince Steve Brosnan that the world had been struck by a meteorite, and that zombies had taken over.

Derren Brown stars in his new show Svengali at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London

Brown described the 21-year-old as having a "dead-end job", and that he was "stuck in a rut".

However, fans have claimed that Brosnan may be a stooge, after it was allegedly discovered that he belonged to a professional actors' casting website.

Brosnan's Twitter account was said to have been linked to his page on the Casting Call Pro site, but was later altered to the names Craig Harwood and Jerrin Matthews, before being taken down.

However, Channel 4 has since denied any reports that Brosnan has ever been an actor, and that the Casting Call Pro page was likely a fake.

A spokesman told The Sun: "Steven is not and never has been a professional actor. He was chosen purely because he fitted the characteristics needed for the show."

Mary Berry 'unsure about US Bake Off role'

Mary Berry is reportedly unsure about whether she would appear on the planned US version of The Great British Bake Off.

CBS announced the show, which has the working title Bake Off, earlier this month.

The Sun quotes Berry as saying: "I have no idea if I will be asked. I've not thought about it and I'm not going to think about it, as it would mean being away a lot."

However, Berry's fellow judge Paul Hollywood has apparently said that he would be interested in a role on the show, potentially as its host.

An insider recently claimed that executives are "desperate" for Berry and Hollywood to be involved in CBS's Bake Off, as they believe that the pair's "lightness of touch" will be popular with viewers in the United States.

Richard McKerrow, who launched the series in the UK as executive producer, will oversee Bake Off for Love Productions USA.

International versions of the show have already launched in countries such as Belgium, Denmark, Sweden and Poland. The format will also premiere in Australia, Ireland and France during 2013.

'Strictly Come Dancing' Louis Smith in trouble over spoiler tweet

Strictly Come Dancing contestant Louis Smith has reportedly been given a warning by BBC bosses regarding spoilers.

The Olympic gymnast tweeted to his thousands of followers about Sid Owen's exit from the competition before it aired on Sunday (October 28).

The EastEnders actor was eliminated on Sunday's (October 28) results show, which was filmed immediately after the initial performances on Saturday.

Smith accidentally revealed who had exited the competition on Saturday night, tweeting: "Wat an amazing but emotional roller coaster (sic).

"So much luv for @FlaviaCacace & it's so sad to say bye to @sidowen5 & @The_OlaJordan #crewlove."

The tweet was later deleted after BBC producers contacted Smith about his error, reports The Sun.

A BBC source said: "Saturday night can be quite overwhelming and emotional for the celebrities, especially when someone leaves the contest.

"Louis was so caught up in the show that he totally forgot that TV audiences - along with fans who follow him on Twitter - hadn't seen the result.

"Luckily the tweet was noticed quickly and taken down, and the importance of keeping the show result secret has been impressed upon Louis.

"He is embarrassed about it, but at the end of the day it was an honest mistake."

Louis Smith topped the Strictly leaderboard with partner Flavia Cacace after their tango routine to Rihanna's track 'Disturbia'.

No 'Office' Spinoff, Rainn Wilson Says

Dwight Schrute won't be getting any dirt under his fingernails on "The Farm."

"Farm Update: NBC has passed on moving forward with The Farm TV show," would-be star Rainnn Wilson tweeted Monday. "Had a blast making the pilot - onwards & upwards!"

The series would have followed life on a beet farm maintained by Wilson's "Office" character, Schrute, and his family. Matt Jones, who plays Badger on "Breaking Bad," was to play Schrute's cousin Zeke.

The series would have continued the legacy of NBC's longrunning "The Office," which is in its ninth and last season.

Wilson has previously promised that "The Farm" would be "even more far out and weird" than "The Office." But NBC has lately expressed a taste for more mainstream comedy.

The network has said it is seeking broader sitcoms than its Thursday night shows, which tend to score critical acclaim but not high ratings.

"The Office" is usually by far the highest-rated of its Thursday shows, but has declined since the exit of star Steve Carell.

Baltasar Kormakur to Direct Pilot of HBO and Mark Wahlberg's 'The Missionary'

Baltasar Kormakur will direct the pilot of HBO’s “The Missionary,” a spy thriller that Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Malcolm Gladwell are executive producing.

Set in Cold War-era Berlin, the project follows a young American missionary who becomes involved in the CIA.

Charles Randolph wrote the script, with Levinson's Leverage and Wahlberg's Closest to the Hole Production producing.

Kormakur (left) and Wahlberg have struck up a healthy working relationship dating to 2012’s “Contraband.” Kormakur directed that crime thriller, which Wahlberg starred in. It grossed almost $100 million at the worldwide box office.

The two teamed up again for “2 Guns,” another crime thriller that stars Wahlberg and Denzel Washington. It just finished production and is due for release next August

Kormakur is an Icelandic director who mixes big-studio productions with more independent fare, such as "The Deep," Iceland's nominee for a 2013 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.

More television projects are bringing high-profile directors aboard to direct the pilot, perhaps most notably with Martin Scorsese on "Boardwalk Empire." "Boardwalk" is one of four HBO shows produced by Wahlberg over the years, a list that also includes "Entourage," "In Treatment" and "How to Make it in America."

'Merlin: The Game' open beta launches

Merlin: The Game is now available to play as an open beta.

Developed by Bossa Studios, the Facebook video game adaptation of the BBC television series features real-time co-operative play, allowing players to explore quests with six other friends.

The role-playing social game involves players travelling across Camelot, fighting monsters and levelling up.

Bossa Studios' creator-in-chief Imre Jele had previously told Digital Spy that Merlin: The Game will also be accessible to those unfamiliar with the show.

"Not everyone knows the TV show," he said. "So we've designed it in a way that if you know the show, you're going to find a lot of little things that are relevant for the game."

Merlin: The Game can be accessed on the title's official website.

A Nintendo DS game based on Merlin will be available later this month.

Russell T Davies: 'I won't be involved in Doctor Who 50th anniversary'

Russell T Davies has confirmed that he will not be involved in Doctor Who's 50th anniversary.

Davies served as head writer on the BBC sci-fi drama between 2005 and 2010, but told What's on TV that he is unlikely to contribute a new episode in 2013.

"I think I'd be like the ghost at the feast," he said. "What would I do - turn up and make the tea?"

Davies added: "I have asked current boss Steven Moffat not to tell me what they are planning."

The Welsh writer also insisted that there will be no Doctor Who references in his new CBBC show Wizards Vs Aliens.

"I drew the line at Doctor Who - it would feel like the most awful in-joke!" he explained. "Even though I'd love the Daleks to turn up one day, we couldn't do it. They are separate universes."

Wizards Vs Aliens begins on October 29 on CBBC at 5.15pm.

'EastEnders' June Brown, Dawn French to star in new BBC Two sitcom

EastEnders legend June Brown and Dawn French are to star in a new BBC Two sitcom, written by Sue Perkins.

Great British Bake-Off host Perkins will also feature alongside Benidorm's Steve Pemberton and Drop the Dead Donkey's Jeff Rawle in Heading Out.

Heading Out will tell the story of Sara (Perkins), a vet who is given an ultimatum by her friends to tell her parents that she is gay after she turns 40.

Perkins has said of the comedy: "I think once the gnawing terror, sleepless nights and relentless self-doubt has subsided, this might well be the thing that I'm most proud of."

The show's executive editor Kristian Smith said: "Audiences can expect a super-sized, well-baked comedy from one of our very finest."

Heading Out, a six-part series, will air sometime next year.

Ben Stiller Executive-Producing Comedy for ABC

ABC has purchased a comedy project to be executive-produced by Ben Stiller, a spokeswoman for the network told TheWrap.

The series, entitled "Complikated," will star  Bonnie Hunt as Kate, a confidently insecure woman with a complicated life.

Hunt, who previously starred in "The Bonnie Hunt Show,"  is also co-writing with her Bob & Alice Productions partner Don Lake.

Stiller's Red Hour Television is developing the project with Bob & Alice. Red Hour's Debbie Liebling and Stuart Cornfeld will also executive-produce.

Deadline first reported the news of "Complikated"'s sale to ABC.

Current TV Evaluating Sale Offers

"Current has been approached many times by media companies interested in acquiring our company," Current said in a statement. "This year alone, we have had three inquiries. As a consequence, we thought it might be useful to engage expertise to help us evaluate our strategic options."

A Current spokeswoman, who asked that her name not be used, says the company has enlisted its bankers -- JP Morgan Chase and the Raine Group -- to evaluate the possibility of a sale. The spokeswoman said she did not know who the suitors were or how many of the offers remain on the table.

The network is also considering fundraising with new investors or forming new partnerships, the spokeswoman said.

The New York Post reported Friday that the liberal network founded by former Vice President Al Gore and Joel Hyatt was for sale. But the Current spokeswoman said that the company had not put itself on the block or sought any of the offers.

Current has struggled for viewers since its 2005 debut. Hiring Keith Olbermann last year was expected to give it a ratings jolt, but the combustible host left the network in less than a year after feuding with management.

It has sought to reinvent itself with shows led by politicians and veterans of other networks, including former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, and ex-MSNBC host Cenk Uygur.

'Attack of the Show!' 'X-Play' Canceled

G4 is cancelling "Attack of the Show!" and "X-Play," two giddily nerdy shows that helped define the network.

Both shows will end production at the end of the year after 1,700 episodes of "Attack of the Show" and 1,300 episodes of "X-Play."

"Attack of the Show!," perhaps best known for launching the career of former host Olivia Munn, has focused since its 2005 debut on technology, games, pop culture, movies and videos. Candace Bailey and Sara Underwood now host.

The gaming-obsessed "X-Play" debuted in 2003 on G4's previous incarnation, TechTV. It is now hosted by Morgan Webb and Blair Herter.

G4 said several guest co-hosts -- including John Barrowman, Michael Ian Black, Josh Myers, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel and Horatio Sanz -- would appear in the last two months of episodes for both shows.

"'Attack of the Show!' and "X-Play" have been important for G4, and we want to acknowledge the creative people who have helped inspire and showcase the phenomenon of gamer culture,” G4 Media general manager Adam Stotsky said. “With more than 3,000 episodes aired between them, we have more than enough great material to honor these innovators and their amazing contributions as we bring both shows to a close.”

Mira Sorvino, Rebecca Romijn Cast in TNT Pilots

"Mimic" star Mira Sorvino and "X2" actress Rebecca Romijn have both landed leads in upcoming TNT pilots, the network told TheWrap on Friday.

Sorvino will star in "Trooper," a procedural drama executive-produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The project, which had earlier received a pilot order from CBS but did not go forward, follows a recently divorced female state trooper. The mother of three takes an unconventional approach to her work, but is paired with a by-the-books partner.

Aron Eli Coleite ("Heroes," "The River") is writing the project which comes via Warner Horizon Television.

Romijn, meanwhile, will star in "King and Maxwell" as Michelle Maxwell, a former secret service agent, who takes on politically sensitive cases in Washington, DC. With her striking beauty, athletic prowess and her Beltway connections, Maxwell is a formidable investigator, determined to prove herself after being forced to resign from the secret service.

Jon Tenney ("The Closer") will play Maxwell's partner, Sean King.

Adapted from characters created by author David Baldacci, "King and Maxwell" is being  being produced for TNT by CBS Television Studios and Shane Brennan Productions, with Shane Brennan (of "NCIS," "NCIS: LA") as executive producer and Karen Spiegel ("Absolute Power") and Grant Anderson ("Third Watch") as producers.

Baldacci serves as a consultant on the project.

A third pilot ordered by TNT, "Legends," will star Brendan Fraser as undercover operative Martin Odum, who has a chameleon-like ability to transform himself into a different person for each mission.

Gillian Anderson denies David Duchovny romance rumours

Gillian Anderson has denied recent reports that she and X-Files co-star David Duchovny had recently begun dating.

Gossip site Celebrity Dirty Laundry claimed in the summer that the pair had been in a "serious relationship" for some time, after Anderson split from partner Mark Griffiths.

Duchovny's representative denied the rumours at the time, but Anderson confirmed in an interview with the Guardian that the pair were never romantically involved.

The 44-year-old said: "No, there wasn't any truth in that. I was enjoying the ludicracy [sic] of it for a while, but then he started denying it publicly and so I lost all my enjoyment of it."

When told that she had potentially broken the hearts of X-Files fans who had always hoped for their characters Mulder and Scully to get together, she replied "I know", then joked: "I emailed him at one point and said: 'You left the toilet seat up again'."

Anderson can be seen in the film Sister, released in UK cinemas this week, and her voice will also be heard in the English dub of Studio Ghibli animation From Up on Poppy Hill.

Howie Mandel's Latest Game Show Gets a Premiere Date

Howie Mandel's latest entry into the game-show genre will premiere Dec. 10 on NBC, the network said Friday.

"Take it All" (formerly titled "Howie Mandel's White Elephant") will air Dec. 10-14 at 9 p.m. ET, wrapping up its run with back-to-back episodes on Dec. 17, starting at 9 p.m.

The show will feature a contestant selecting and opening a high-end prize, with the next player having to decide if they will steal the prize or take a chance with a second, unopened prize, which could be worth more than the first prize. When the contestants have been narrowed down to two players, they will be forced to decide if they want to keep what they've won, or take all of the prizes.

In what basically amounts to a high-stakes game of rock-paper-scissors, if one player chooses to keep their prizes and the other chooses to take all of the prizes, the "take it all" player goes home with all of the prizes. However, if they both choose to take all of the prizes, they both go home empty-handed.

The airing of "Take it All" means that "The Voice" will run a one-hour episode rather than a two-hour episode at 8 p.m. on Dec. 10 and Dec. 17.

"Take It All" comes via Universal Television and Alevy Productions, with Mandel, Scott St. John and Mike Marks as the executive producers.

'The Thick of It' team on show finalé: 'Leave them wanting more'

Armando Iannucci has confirmed that the current run of The Thick of It will "definitely" be the last.

The show has run for four series with a pair of specials between the second and third, and the final episode of the current run will air this weekend.

Iannucci told The Guardian: "It's definitely the last series. I've known from past experience to never say never.

"I don't think it's going to change politics. In terms of comedy hopefully it will inspire someone in the same way that I remember listening to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or watching Not the Nine O'Clock News and thinking, 'I want to do something like that'."

The Thick of It: Malcolm Tucker (PETER CAPALDI), Olly Reeder (CHRIS ADDISON), Helen Hawkins (REBECCA GETHINGS), Nicola Murray (REBECCA FRONT)

Writer Sean Gray added: "It's a shame to stop but it also makes sense because hopefully we haven't outstayed our welcome.

"It's great to leave at a point where people are hopefully wanting more. That's the best way."

Various members of The Thick of It team including Chris Addison had previously confirmed on Twitter that the show would end with the fourth series finalé.

The seventh and final episode in the fourth series of The Thick of It airs this Saturday (October 27) at 9.30pm on BBC Two.

Hayley Atwell to lead three-part ITV crime drama 'Life of Crime'

Hayley Atwell is to star in a new ITV crime drama.

The three-part series, entitled Life of Crime and scripted by Waking the Dead scribe Declan Croghan, will span three decades of a police officer's career.

Atwell will take the lead role of rookie policewoman Denise Woods, who becomes obsessed with one particular case involving the murder of a teenage girl.

Beginning with the Brixton riots in 1985, the three instalments will follow Denise's professional development through the police force, her single-minded and frequently reckless pursuit of justice, and her struggle to be accepted in a male-dominated environment.

The second and third episodes will be set in 1997 and 2013 respectively.

Life of Crime will begin shooting in Brixton and Dublin from November.

Matt Smith wants 'Doctor Who', 'Breaking Bad' crossover

Matt Smith has said that he would "love" a crossover episode between Doctor Who and Breaking Bad.

The actor named the dark AMC drama when asked about his dream crossover by Radio 1's Fearne Cotton.

"I've been loving Breaking Bad... I'd love the Doctor to meet Heisenberg in Breaking Bad," Smith enthused, referring to the pseudonym used by Walter White (Bryan Cranston) in his criminal dealings.

"Breaking Bad flips your world upside down."

In a crossover closer to home, Smith was recently pictured alongside his predecessor as the Doctor, David Tennant.

Letterman to Trump: President Should Be 'Above Coercion or Simple Blackmail'

Donald Trump visited the "Late Show With David Letterman" to repeat his vow to give $5 million to the charity of Barack Obama's choice if the president will hand over his college and travel records.

Trump says the offer is about encouraging transparency. But Letterman didn't exactly sound all in.

"I like to think of the president as being above coercion or simple blackmail here," he said.

"Well, it's not blackmail," Trump replied.

Letterman asked why Mitt Romney hasn't released all of its tax returns, prompting Trump to think of yet another deal.

"I'll tell you, the swap I like?" Trump said. "His tax returns for President Obama's college records and passport records."

Nanny Deaths: Comcast CEO Extends Condolences to Executive Whose Children Were Murdered

Comcast CEO Brian L. Roberts extended his condolences Friday to the family of a CNBC executive whose two children, police say, were murdered by their nanny in Manhattan.

"I just want to say on behalf of all of us at CNBC and Comcast and NBCUniversal and many others around the nation how touched and sad we are by this unspeakable act, and that we'll do everything we can to support the family in their awful time," Roberts (pictured) said at the end of Comcast's earnings call Friday. "We'll go back to our jobs but have them in our thoughts and prayers."

Two of Kevin Krim's children, ages 2 and 6, were stabbed to death Thursday. Their mother, Marina, discovered them in a bathtub, and their nanny was found unconscious with stab wounds police believe were self-inflicted. No charges have been filed yet against the nanny, 50-year-old Yoselyn Ortega.

Krim, CNBC’s digital general manager, was reportedly on a business trip to San Francisco at the time of the killings and returned home to be with his wife and their other child.

Comcast and NBCU also released a statement Friday.

"A member of the CNBC family has suffered an unimaginable loss," it said. "The sadness that we all feel for Kevin, Marina and their family is without measure. Our thoughts, prayers and unwavering support are with them all."

Earnings: Olympics Help Comcast Earn Higher 3Q Profits

Comcast Corp. posted a higher quarterly profit on Friday thanks in large part to increased revenues from NBCUniversal's Olympics coverage.

Comcast's third-quarter net income was $2.1 billion, or 78 cents a share, compared with $908 million, or 33 cents a share a year earlier.

Revenue for NBCUniversal increased 31.2 percent to $6.8 billion in the third quarter of 2012 compared to $5.2 billion in the third quarter of 2011, primarily driven by 2012 London Olympics revenue of $1.2 billion in the Broadcast Television segment. Excluding the Olympics, NBCUniversal revenue increased 8.3 percent.

"Steve Burke and his team are making steady progress thorughout all of NBCUniversal," Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said of the NBCU CEO.

Roberts said NBC's ratings are up 17 percent over last season and up 31 percent in entertainment. It is the first time it has led the broadcast networks in the ratings in the first four weeks of the season since 2002. NBC spent years in fourth place.

"It's certainy early but I believe and hope we are seeing the beginning of a turnaround at NBC," Roberts said.

Comcast also lost fewer video customers and gained more online customers than analysts expected.

Excluding gains from sales of spectrum and a stake in A&E Networks, earnings came to 46 cents a share -- up 39 percent. That matched analysts' average estimate, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue rose 15 percent to $16.54 billion, beating Wall Street estimates of $16.08 billion.

The games drew a record audience that averaged 31.1 million viewers per night, 12 percent more than the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Strong Olympics ratings mean Comcast will at least break even on its $1.18 billion deal for Olympics broadcast rights, while analysts had initially expected it to lose money from the agreement.

Comcast took a 51 percent controlling stake in NBC Universal in January 2011. It holds the U.S. broadcast rights for the next four Olympic contests.

The cable unit, which includes video and Internet, earned $9.98 billion in revenues, up 6.9 percent. The company lost 117,000 video customers, which beat StreetAccount estimates of a loss of 133,000. Its 287,000 new Internet customers also beat expectations.

Adam Carolla Joins Fox News Channel as a Contributor

Adam Carolla has found a new gig on the Fox News Channel.

The "Dancing With the Stars" alum, podcast star and perennial loudmouth has signed up with Fox News as a contributor, a spokesperson for Fox told TheWrap.  Carolla will appear primarily on "The O'Reilly Factor," but will also contribute to other Fox News shows.

Carolla, who has occasionally appeared on Fox in the past, will make his first appearance as a contributor on "The O'Reilly Factor" on Monday.

Though Carolla's political ideology isn't completely rigid he does tend to lean conservative on certain topics.

"I don't really have one group where I can subscribe to all of their dogma wholeheartedly," Carolla has said. "I guess I would be Republican, in the sense that I want a secure border, I'm not into the welfare state, I'm not into all those freebie lunch programs. It just kind of demeans people. On the other hand, I'd like pot to be legalized and I'm against semi-automatic and automatic weapons."

'X Factor' Christopher Maloney responds to missing masterclass

X Factor contestant Christopher Maloney has responded to reports that he fled to Liverpool during the week and missed a masterclass with Robbie Williams.

The 34-year-old singer was asked by Caroline Flack and Olly Murs on The Xtra Factor tonight (October 27) whether it was true he didn't tell the producers of the show that he was going to Liverpool.

Maloney responded: "No, it wasn't true."

Flack then clarified the question, and Maloney admitted that he did go back to his hometown during the week, but that he had sought permission to do so.

He said: "I did go back to see my family in Liverpool because my nanna wasn't very well, so I had the afternoon off."

Flack then said it "was good to clear things up".

Maloney was also asked whether he was solely in the competition due to the people of Liverpool voting for him.

He said their support had been "absolutely fantastic" and that he "couldn't thank them enough", but added that he believed he had fans across the UK.

X Factor's Lucy Spraggan 'too ill to perform'

Lucy Spraggan will not take part in this week's X Factor live shows.

The 'Tea and Toast' singer fell ill earlier this week and show bosses made the decision today (October 26) not to include her in the performance lineup.

"NEWS: @lspraggan is just too unwell to perform on tonight's #xfactor," tweeted the official X Factor account, before adding: "Lucy will proceed to next weekend's show as happened with @diana_music [past contestant Diana Vickers]."

Vickers was issued a bye during the fifth week of the 2008 series after suffering with laryngitis. As a result, she was not subjected to the public vote and automatically progressed to the sixth round of the competition.

Spraggan, who is reportedly suffering from "severe flu", was last seen in public on Wednesday night (October 24), when she attended fellow contestant Rylan Clark's Halloween-themed birthday party dressed as a pumpkin.

The 21-year-old from Sheffield has not updated her own Twitter account since before the celebrations. Clark - who along with Spraggan is currently staying in a nearby hotel after being kicked out of the official contestants' lodgings following drunken behaviour - took to his account earlier today and posted an update that read: "F**k I'm ill."

No announcement has yet been made about whether Clark will compete in this evening's live show.

Alan Cumming to Host BAFTA's Britannia Awards Again This Year

If the whole acting thing doesn't work out for Alan Cumming, it looks like he has a steady backup gig as the host of the Britannia Awards.

"X2" star Cumming will once again host the awards ceremony this year, the British Academy of Television Arts (BAFTA) Los Angeles said Thursday. This will mark the fourth time that Cumming will preside over the ceremony, described by BAFTA Los Angeles as the organization's "highest accolade, a celebration of achievements honoring individuals and companies that have dedicated their careers to advancing the entertainment arts."

"I'm so happy to be back hosting my fourth Britannia Awards,” the Scottish actor said. “It's 15 years since I first came to Hollywood and what better way to commemorate that than to be hosting a celebration of the best of British and Tinseltown. I'm excited to see old friends and raise a few glasses to the best in our business – and be a bit mischievous too of course.”

BAFTA Los Angeles also said that Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford and Josh Gad will be among this year's presenters.

The 2012 Britannia Awards will take place Nov. 7 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, and will air on BBC America on Nov. 11.

'Downton Abbey', 'Game of Thrones' stars for BBC One's 'The Syndicate'

Mark Addy (Game of Thrones) and Siobhan Finneran (Downton Abbey) are among those confirmed to star in a second series of BBC drama The Syndicate.

Series two of Kay Mellor's acclaimed show will focus on five low-paid hospital workers in Bradford who win £72 million in the EuroMillions lottery draw.

Addy will play recovering alcoholic Alan, who finds himself tempted by the booze following the big win, while Finneran is cast as nurse Mandy.

Natalie Gavin (Prisoners' Wives) will star as Mandy's daughter Becky, a single mother whose numbers win the jackpot, while Jimi Mistry (Strike Back) is male nurse Tom, who decides to have a baby with his girlfriend following the win.

Gavin & Stacey's Alison Steadman is the final member of the syndicate, former dancer Rose, who hopes to pick up where she left off with the help of an expensive double knee replacement.

"The Syndicate is a drama series of our time," said writer Mellor. "As the world recession bites harder and deeper, more and more people are doing the lottery. It gives them the weekly hope of winning their way out of debt and poverty. They are five little balls away from living their dream or so they think!"

BBC One's Polly Hill added: "We are delighted to be making a second series of the acclaimed drama The Syndicate. Kay's brilliant scripts have once again attracted an incredible cast that will make this drama a real treat for the BBC One audience next year."

The first series of The Syndicate starred Timothy Spall, Lorraine Bruce, Matthew Lewis, Matthew McNulty and Joanna Page as supermarket workers who won a big cash prize.

Young Apprentice 2012: Lord Sugar to take show to rival channel?

Lord Sugar has said he’s considering taking the Young Apprentice to another channel, after the BBC cancelled the series.

The Apprentice spin-off will be back next month on BBC One, but will be the last series after the BBC confirmed it would not be commissioning a fourth run.

“The BBC, in their usual manner, like to palm it off that it’s not their fault,” Lord Sugar said today. “Let me make it perfectly clear — if it doesn’t come back, it will be because the BBC hasn’t got the funding or they don’t wish to commission it again.

“I would do it all day and all night. The fact is that the BBC have financial constraints and have to juggle their scheduling.

“This is one of many programmes which maybe they won’t be able to commission again, so there it is.”

Speaking to The Sun this morning about the upcoming series, Lord Sugar said he hoped the line up of teenage youngsters would prove to be a hit in the ratings.

He said: “The kids are excellent. There are some great candidates, some great youngsters — the future entrepreneurs of Britain.

“Regretfully, if the BBC can’t do the show I may have to take the format somewhere else. I’m passionate about business programmes with youngsters.”

The brand new series of Young Apprentice 2012 starts on Thursday, November 1st at 8PM on BBC One.

'ER' Alum Ming-Na Joins Joss Whedon's 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' Pilot for ABC

"ER" veteran Ming-Na has signed on for another acronym-driven project.

Ming-Na, who starred on the medical drama "ER" for nine years, has signed on for "Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D." pilot, which will be written by "Avengers" writer-director Joss Whedon, his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen ("Dollhouse").

The pilot revolves around the titular peace-keeping force featured in Marvel comics and the movies that they spawned, including "The Avengers."

Ming-Na will play agent Melinda May.

Whedon will also executive-produce the project along with Jed, Tancharoen, Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb of Marvel Television if it goes into production, and is attached to direct, schedule permitting.

"The Avengers" actor Clark Gregg, who played Agent Coulson in the big-screen superhero epic, has also signed on for the pilot, which comes via ABC Studios and Marvel Television.

Ming-Na's other recent television work includes runs on "Two and a Half Men," as well as the sci-fi offerings "SGU Stargate Universe" and "Eureka."

'Scrubs' Star Zach Braff Lands Comedy With ABC

Zach Braff is coming back to network TV -- behind the camera this time.

Former "Scrubs" star Braff will write, executive-produce and direct a new half-hour comedy that's been purchased by ABC.

"Garage Bar" will revolve around a gang of pals who discover the good and bad sides of fame when one of them hits it big as a music star.

The project is produced by 20th Century Fox Television.

Deadline first reported the news of "Garage Bar"'s purchase.

X Factor 2012 judges: Tulia gets dress ban for wearing 'fakes'

X Factor judge Tulisa has been hit with a ban on designer dresses, after being pictured wearing fakes!

An official spokesperson for top designer Herve Leger confirmed it was refusing to loan Tulisa any of its bandage dresses, after she wore ‘knock off’ copycat styles.

The spokesperson told heat magazine this week: “Herve Leger has a policy that we do not support anyone who wears fake goods.”

A source explained how Tulisa had previously been lent dresses worth thousands of pounds for the live shows last year.

“Tulisa has been known for wearing Herve Leger before and was lent two dresses for The X Factor last year – one dress was worth £12,000,” the insider said.

However the source revealed that Tulisa’s decision to wear cheaper versions of the dress, such as the one above, have seen her banned by the fashion label.

“But earlier this summer she was spotted wearing fake versions of the brand, so they’ve made the decision to stop lending to her,” the source added.

Speaking about her style to the magazine, Tulisa added: “There are two sides to my style: Young, fresh and glam, and urban, edgy and cool. In the past year, since going solo, I’ve started finding myself when it comes to fashion.”

Unfortunately for Tulisa, Louis Walsh has said this week that she needs to “up her game” in the style war with Nicole Scherzinger.

“I’d have to say Nicole is winning. I think Nicole gets it right nearly all the time. Tulisa has had to up her game! She looks fabulous too,” Louis said.

The XFactor continues this Saturday night with a spooky Halloween themed episode as the remaining ten contestants perform live once again.

The latest results show follows on Sunday, which will feature performances from Fun. and Robbie Williams, as well as one more act being given the boot.

I'm A Celebrity 2012 line up: The rumours so far!

I’m A Celebrity 2012 kicks off next month on ITV1, and there’s been plenty of rumours about this year’s line up.

Most recently, Helen Flanagan has been addressing reports that she’s set to appear in the jungle this year.

Discussing the rumours that she has signed up for I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!, Helen told The Sun this week that the series would be a “daunting project” for her and her fears.

She told the newspaper yesterday: “I get asked to do shows like this all the time, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

“It would be a daunting prospect as I’m very scared of heights and it would be a real challenge.

“I think it’s something you would have to really think about before agreeing to do.”

It’s certainly not a no!

Rumoured celebs that could be joining Helen on this year’s I’m A Celebrity line up include singer Grace Jones, darts champ Eric Bristow and Birds of a Feather star Linda Robson.

It was reported earlier this year that bosses were keen to get Olympic stars on this year’s line up.

According to The Sun, names on the show’s wish list include cycling champs Bradley Wiggins and Elizabeth Armitstead, as well as gymnast Beth Tweddle and swimmer Rebecca Adlington.

Producers have also apparently found themselves involved in a bidding war with Celebrity Big Brother bosses over one star.

Kate Middleton’s stripper cousin Katrina Darling is reportedly wanted for both shows, with Channel 5 bosses also keen to get the burlesque performer onto Celebrity Big Brother 2013

According to the Daily Star recently, producers from both camps are prepared to “break the bank” in the hopes that Katrina will provide reality telly “dynamite”

Former Celebrity Big Brother star Georgia Salpa is also set to enter the I’m A Celebrity jungle later this year.

The Sun reports that I’m A Celeb bosses want the Irish model to sex up the camp this November.

But the brunette beauty could be too scared to take part, with a fear with heights and snakes.

“If she went on the show, it could have the same effect on her career as it did for Myleene Klass,” a pal of the model’s said.

However Georgia hit back at the claims this week. “I don’t know where people got that from but I’m definitely not going to be on the show this year,” she said. “To be honest I think I’m a little too girly to set up camp in the jungle anyway.”

Former Eastenders star Ricky Groves has also been linked to I’m A Celebrity 2012.

The Sun reported this week that the actor, who played Garry Hobbs in the BBC One series, has been approached to take part in the upcoming series of I’m A Celebrity . . . Get Me Out Of Here!

The newspaper also claims that Ricky is “keen” to head out to the Aussie jungle next month for the new series

More recently, Former What Not To Wear presenters Trinny and Susannah are rumoured to be heading Down Under to take part in the new series.

The Sun claims that the fashionistas hope to revive their UK telly careers with an appearance on the ITV show, which returns next month.

A source told the newspaper: “It will be great watching Trinny and Susannah trying to slum it in the jungle. They are both strong and opinionated women and they’re bound to ruffle a lot of feathers.”

TOWIE beauty Maria Fowler has also been linked to the series, having quit the ITV2 series earlier this year.

A source told the Daily Star: “Producers are digging deep to try to get her. There is talk of offers on the table of up to £250,000.”

And Maria could be joined by Pussycat Doll babe Ashley Roberts, with an insider telling The Sun today: “Ashley is feisty and fun, but above all sexy. The jungle nonsense won’t faze her.”

Misfits’ 10 most rubbish powers

In celebration of Misfits’ unique approach to super-powers, we count down the ten most useless abilities to feature on the show so far…

It’s the ultimate in pub conversations. More revealing than “Who remembers The Flumps?”, more engrossing than dissecting the England line-up, and much less nasty than Shag Marry Kill. If you could have a super-power, which would you choose?

The creators of Misfits must have spent a fair amount of time reflecting on just that. Set in the aftermath of an ability-endowing storm that left its victims not just damp but with the powers of invisibility, telepathy and the like, Misfits is filthy, violent, very, very funny, and back for its fourth series at the end of this month.

Initially at least, the Misfits allocation of abilities related to the personality of the receiver. One was shy and ignored, so gained the power of invisibility, another regretted past mistakes, so became able to rewind time, and so on. The introduction of a powers dealer in the series two Christmas special provided a whoosh of new life for the series by mixing up the initial combinations of character and power. And if you were lumbered with one of the ten powers below, selling’s probably your best option…

Lacto-manipulation

If Misfits proves anything about the whole super-abilities business, it’s that it’s not what you have, but how you use it that’s important. Kelly (Lauren Socha) swapped her telepathy for genius-level electro-engineering skills, which on paper, sounded like a practical acquisition. As it turned out, aside from fixing the odd car engine or burglar alarm, Kelly’s newly acquired skills proved of little use other than to coin her new character catchphrase: “I’m a fucking rocket scientist” (totally worth it, in my book).

The power to manipulate lactose-based produce on the other hand (as demonstrated by Brian in series two) sounds about as useful as a chocolate kettle, but in the right, psychopathic hands, turned out to be a sinister murderous weapon, so long as your victim was a recent ingester of dairy products. By controlling the lactose molecules inside people’s digestive systems, young Brian was able to cause strokes, heart attacks and choke his victims to cheesy death.

Only useful if: the Venn diagram of people you want to kill and people who consume cheese toasties has a significant overlap.

Thinking you’re a Jack Russell Terrier

There’s never been a comic book hero whose superpower was being convinced they were their childhood Jack Russell, has there? Probably for the best, that.

Nathan’s mum’s boyfriend’s storm-related power was the nocturnal ability to think he was a dog, with all the concomitant bin-bag scavenging, cat-chasing, and public defecation you’d expect. It wasn’t a Dr Doolittle deal either - Jeremy couldn’t just talk to dogs, he became one in every way but physically (where he remained very much a man as the gang were keen to point out). More curse than superpower, this one.

Only useful if: It’s probably the only circumstance in which you’d be able to get away with licking your step-son’s face whilst in the nude without Esther Rantzen getting involved.

Alopecia power!

Just by its title, you know this isn’t going to top many superhero wish-lists, though it is an effective ‘walk a mile in my Nikes’-style punishment. Tailored to suit Jodi, an alopecia-sufferer and the girl Kelly lamped in Argos to end up as one of the ASBO five, this is the power to make your enemy’s hair fall out. It’s not the most violent blow to strike against a foe, and one of the few super-powered attacks that can be rectified using a perky bandana.

Only useful if: You were pitted against biblical Samson.

Tony’s rage

Tony was the probation officer who started it all, the first Spinal Tap drummer if you will. Since Tony, three more – Sally, Shaun and Laura – have all corked it, a track record that means series four newcomer Greg (the brilliant Shaun Dooley) probably shouldn’t start any long books in the near future.

After the storm struck, Tony was gifted with super-strength twinned with a murderous rage that sent him berserk towards his ASBO charges. Fair enough, the strength might come in handy, but Hulking out isn’t the most practical of abilities, meriting his milky-eyed rage a place on this list.

Only useful if: You’re pursuing a career in underground cage fights? Need to defeat the Red Hulk? Anything that requires ice-pick murder?

Sexy pheromone frenzy

Ethically, this power is a mess, and - to quote an offensive but apt line from The Inbetweeners - a bit rapey. Misfits isn’t one to shy away from sexual assault as episode fodder, having featured a sex attack Jesus in its Christmas special, devoted Curtis’ gender-swap episode to the subject, and disturbingly, showed Simon fondle a barely conscious Kelly early on in the show’s run.

Alisha’s ability (developed thanks to her use of sex to manipulate her way out of tricky situations and reputation as, to quote another indelicate phrase, a “cock monster”) means she can uncontrollably turn on anyone who touches her. It’s soon revealed to be more Midas-like curse than a gift, scuppering her sex life with Curtis, and gaining her a huge amount of unwanted attention. As soon as she’s able in fact, she gets rid of it, opting for the much more sensible power of clairvoyance.

Only useful if: You’re a sex offender.

Video game vision

Viewing real-life through the warped prism of your favourite video game (as suffered by one-off character Tim in series two), isn’t so much a power as a hindrance. If you were a fan of the indie or retro market at least, then the notion of bouncing along like an 8-bit Mario or floating down the high street like that amoeba from Flow has its attractions, but if like Tim, you’ve confused Thamesmead South for Liberty City, it’s never going to end well.

Imagine living your life as if it’s a Grand Theft Auto mission. Shell suits, shitbag caricatured gangsters and women in eighties boob tubes with post-dental injection open mouths are what awaits. And that’s not even considering the fact that chasing down dodgy contacts and nicking motors is a fast route to the big house, which is exactly where poor deluded Tim ends up.

Only useful if: like that heavily tattooed chap in Prison Break, you’re itching to get yourself arrested.

Emotional twindom

Rudy’s ability to split into two versions of himself (one a cocky raconteur, the other a shivering pile of neuroses), may have its uses when it comes to needing to be in two places at once, but on the whole it’s another bum-deal. Essentially just an excuse to have twice as much Joseph Gilgun on screen (who’s complaining?), Rudy’s emotional twindom was the basis for some great scenes in series three, even if it’s not a power most of us would covet.

Only useful if: you needed to make a quick getaway and only had a railway pump trolley at your disposal?

Genitalia zap attack

I know what you’re thinking, surely the ability to cause a victim’s wedding tackle to change colour, shrivel up and eventually fall off has myriad real-life uses. You can probably think of at least five people right now who deserve the treatment, and that’s before you’ve even had a proper look through today’s papers. Even so, it’s no power of flight now is it, this willy-shrivelling business?

Like a reverse-Dr Christian then, Leah uses her mystical STD ability to dish out a disgusting form of justice to men who lie to get into women’s pants. It’s essentially the genitalia version of that vengeful alopecia treatment, but much, much worse.

Only useful if: You’re the booker on Embarrassing Bodies and short on awful genitals that week.

Zombie resurrection

The power of resurrection is certainly one worth having, but only being able to bring something or someone back as a bloodthirsty zombie? Limited in its applications.

Resurrection was the ability powers dealer Seth was waiting to come along so he could assuage his guilt over his OD’d girlfriend by returning her to the land of the living. When she came back wrong and with a taste for iguana blood though, he realised it was all a mistake. From Shannon to Mr Miggles the cat to that unfortunate cheerleader troupe, the existence of a Misfit zombie is not one to envy.

Only useful if: you were a few walkers short for your The Walking Dead ARG.

Gender swap

Curtis’ power to switch genders ended up causing much more trouble than it was worth, not least when he managed to impregnate himself after engaging in a bout of gender-bending self-abuse. A reluctant recipient of the power to begin with, Curtis did gain some personal insight in a What Women Want kind of way thanks to his newly acquired X chromosome, but his time-turning was the real belter that he should never have let go.

Only useful if: female to male: you needed the loo and there was a queue for the Ladies; male to female: getting a job as your ex-wife's Scottish housekeeper to spend more time with your kids.
