What to Watch Tonight: Modern Family, Suburgatory, and American Horror Story

What to Watch Tonight: Modern Family, Suburgatory, and American Horror Story

Things just haven't been the same since you joined that dangerous street gang. I mean, sure, you've got the cool jacket and also a comb that flips open like a switchblade, but your DVR is getting so full! So tonight, consider coming in from the streets and getting caught up on all the hot properties on your TV:

9pm, ABC
Modern Family
In "Punkin Chunkin," America's favorite gourd-projectile pastime helps bring the family together when drama threatens to ruin Thanksgiving. Said drama includes Phil's unease over the return of a now-rich childhood friend and Cameron's annoyance over Mitchell's need to scrutinize his childhood memories. But seriously, Punkin Chunkin.

10pm, FX
American Horror Story
Tonight we'll finally learn the true identity of the Gimp Suit Ghost! (Why you be knockin' up Connie Britton, rubber dude?) Also Hayden and Nora will join forces for a presumably grim purpose.

8pm, NBC
Up All Night
Reagan spends a week at home, which has negative effects on Chris's daily routine. Also Ava attempts to woo Kevin (Jason Lee) by teaching his daughter how to sing using her extensive '90s R&B experience.

8:30pm, ABC
Suburgatory
Tessa attempts to spend Thanksgiving in the city rather than put up with all the neighborhood traditions (which includes greeting neighbors with the phrase "Gobble gobble.") Elsewhere, Lisa butts heads with her mother when she doesn't want to wear a dress her mother bought for the occasion. Pro-tip: We screened this episode early, and it was much-loved around the TV.com offices.

8pm, CBS
Survivor: South Pacific
Now is a great time to get caught up on a surprisingly strong season! Yep, this week is the highlight episode, but it also nicely provides a point of entry just as the game promises to really heat up now that one alliance has been completely liquidated. Team Sophie!

10pm, ABC
Revenge
Tonight Emily will seek out a mentor when she loses her most trusted friend. Meanwhile Tyler causes even more damage and Victoria's trouble streak continues. (Patiently waiting for a character to accidentally bump into a green screen.)

PLUS NEW EPISODES OF...
The Middle, 8 p.m., ABC
The X Factor, 8 p.m., Fox
Adventure Time with Finn & Jake, 8:30 p.m., Cartoon Network
America's Next Top Model, 9 p.m., CW
Mobbed, 9 p.m., Fox
MythBusters, 9 p.m., Discovery
The Biggest Loser: Where Are They Now, 9 p.m., NBC

'Glee' does Katy Perry (again) -- Listen to 'I Kissed a Girl' right now!

'Glee' does Katy Perry (again) -- Listen to 'I Kissed a Girl' right now!

It's good to know that despite their dueling glee clubs, the girls of McKinley High can stick together (including newbie Sugar Motta).

Last week's "Glee" (Nov. 15) was disastrous for Santana, as a conversation with Finn in the school hallway was overheard by the wrong person and turned into campaign fodder for Sue's Congressional run. Now, everyone's dealing with the fallout from a negative campaign ad that outs Santana as a lesbian -- before she's even revealed that fact to her parents.

Cinemax Starts Production on New Spy Drama, 'Nemesis'

Cinemax Starts Production on New Spy Drama, 'Nemesis'

Cinemax has announced that production is underway on 'Nemesis,' its new drama series set in the world of international espionage. Created and written by Frank Spotnitz ('The X Files,' 'Strike Back'), 'Nemesis' stars Melissa George ('In Treatment,' 'Home and Away'), Adam Rayner ('HawthoRNe'), Stephen Dillane ('Game of Thrones'), Morven Christie ('The Young Victoria') and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje ('Lost').

The eight-part series is is produced by Kudos Film & Television ('MI-5,' 'Life on Mars') for BBC One and HBO/Cinemax in association with Big Light Productions. It will shoot in Scotland, London and Morocco, and is slated to air on Cinemax in 2012.

Spotnitz will executive-produce along with Alison Jackson, Jane Featherstone and Stephen Garrett from Kudos Film & Television and Christopher Aird from the BBC. Eliza Mellor ('Albert Schweitzer,' 'Derek') produces, and SJ Clarkson ('Heroes,' 'Life On Mars') will direct the first two episodes.

In a statement, Spotnitz said "I'm incredibly excited about the ambition of this series. It's got action on a cinematic scale, huge story twists and turns, and intriguing characters who are both emotionally and morally complex. I can't imagine a better cast, director or production team to bring it all to life."

George plays Sam, who's described as "a highly skilled operative for an elite private intelligence firm, who survives an attempt on her life that may have been orchestrated by members of her own team." Once she's back at work she has to figure out who she can trust and who wants her dead. Rayner plays her love interest and co-worker.

The cast is rounded out by Lex Shrapnel ('Captain America: The First Avenger"), Uriel Emil ('Criminal Justice'), Patrick Malahide ('Game of Thrones,' 'Five Days'), Stephen Campbell Moore ('The Bank Job,' 'The History Boys') and Oscar Kennedy ('Toast').

'The Muppets': Our Favorite TV Stars Join Mahna Mahna Craze

It's safe to say we're pretty flipping excited for 'The Muppets' movie.

Not only does the new film star Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, but some of our favorite TV stars like Rashida Jones and Neil Patrick Harris round out the cast. And just like us, they're not immune to the Mahna Mahna song.

In the video below, Jones, Harris, Ken Jeong and more of our favorite scene-stealers join the Mahna Mahna phenomenon.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the video is promoting MuppetsMahnaMahna.com, a site where fans can upload clips of themselves singing the classic song.

Ringer to Have a Buffy Reunion!

Ringer to Have a Buffy Reunion!

Maybe this will help the weak ratings: Sarah Michelle Gellar will reunite with one of her Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-stars on Ringer.

Amber Benson will guest-star in Episode 10 of the freshman series, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively. Benson, who portrayed Willow's girlfriend Tara Maclay on Buffy, will play Mary Curtis, a stripper who is also an informant for Agent Machado (Nestor Carbonell).

Last seen taking a bullet aimed for Buffy in Season 6, Benson has gone on to appear in several TV series, including Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice and Supernatural.

Ringer airs Tuesdays at 9/8c on the CW.

Modern Family First Look: Book of Mormon's Josh Gad Loves to Man-Shake

Modern Family First Look: Book of Mormon's Josh Gad Loves to Man-Shake

The Book of Mormon's Josh Gad will make his Modern Family  debut on Wednesday — and if you can imagine, his character is even more awkward than Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell).

"He grew up in the neighborhood and used to be the Dunphys neighbor," Gad tells TVGuide.com. "He winds up coming back and visiting them. They're very surprised by what he's done with himself because he was not necessarily going to make much of his life and quite the opposite happens."

Modern Family partners with Greg Kinnear for guest spot

Gad has producers Chris Lloyd and Steve Levitan to thank for landing the role. He previously worked with the Modern Family duo on Fox's short-lived comedy Back to You. "We had been trying to pair up for a while to work again together, and one day they called me up and said, 'We have this great character and if you can get a second to break away from your day job, we'd love for you to come and do it," he says. "I, of course, complied because this show is a little bit of a hit, but I felt like it needed my presence in order to get to that next level."

The logistics of getting Gad to Los Angeles to shoot the role weren't as simple as him actually landing the plum part. The Book of Mormon actor flew out to L.A. Monday morning, hopped on a Red Eye that night and hit the stage Tuesday night for Mormon. Still, he says, it was completely worth it. "It was a reunion of sorts with Ty Burell, who was on Back to You, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson and I got our starts in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee on Broadway together. It was so rewarding and I would do it all over again."

Watch full episodes of Modern Family

Despite the chaotic lengths Gad took to shoot Modern Family, he hopes this isn't the last we see of him on TV. "My goal is to fly every Monday for the next year to go do a guest role on every single show currently shooting just to say I did," he says with a laugh. "We'll just start with the CSIs, knock them all off."

As for his time on Modern Family, Gad points to a particular scene that made his time worth it. "The most fun element of the entire shoot was this physical comedy bit that Ty and I got to really create from scratch," he says. "It's an old meet-and-greet handshake that goes just so far and is so unnecessarily elaborate.

5 Reasons Cartoon Network's Level Up Will Make Viewers Say "Huzzah!"

5 Reasons Cartoon Network's Level Up Will Make Viewers Say "Huzzah!"

Cartoon Network is giving its audience another reason to give thanks this holiday season with the premiere of its original movie, Level Up, airing Wednesday at 7/6c.

Gamers Wyatt (Gaelan Connell), Lyle (Jessie T. Usher) and Dante (Connor del Rio) are part of an online clan that travels through the video game "Conqueror of Worlds" under the avatars known as Black Death, Wizza and Sir Bickle. In the real world though, they're just high school students who can barely stand each other. When a freak accident causes their video game to release trolls and other monsters through a portal into their hometown of Daventry Hills, the virtual clansmen must band together for real in order to save humanity.

Watch videos of Cartoon Network shows

Check out five reasons why Level Up will have viewers cheering:

1. A catchy battle cry - The Wizza loves to shout "Huzzah!" when he defeats his foes, and his gaming buddies easily take up the old-fashioned cry (as will the audience at home). Perhaps less catchy and more tongue-twisting is "Tulta munille!" a Finnish battle cry the boys use that has a rather playful translation.

2. Over-the-top weaponry - Defeating Maldark, the titular conqueror or worlds, takes some pretty heavy-duty hardware. It's a good thing the boys have the Thunderpole (wizard's staff), Skullcracker (super-powered club) and Blastaton (unwieldy gun that fires random objects) handy when Maldark's rampaging minions hit town.

3. Girl power - Angie (Aimee Carrero) doesn't just stand by and let the boys have all the fun. Check out this clip of how she gets in on the action:

4. Cross-pop cultural references — If you think video game jargon is for geeks only, think again. The likeable characters discuss cheat codes, beta versions and firewalls before deciding to meet IRL (in real life). Also, Dante can't help quoting (or misquoting) films and TV shows, whether he gulps like a nervous Scooby-Doo or declares, "Save the geek, save the world!" Catching all the references is part of the fun in this fast-paced film.

5. Level Up 2.0 — The adventures don't end with the movie event, which is just the appetizer for Cartoon Network's series of the same name, which will air sometime in 2012. Do we hear a "huzzah"?

All Aboard for AMC's Railroad Drama Hell on Wheels

All Aboard for AMC's Railroad Drama Hell on Wheels

One of the resonant early images in AMC's ambitious new drama Hell on Wheels — about the building of the transcontinental railroad in the fractious days immediately after the Civil War — has religious believers ecstatically submitting to baptism while, in the background, violent progress proceeds apace, with huge explosions tearing up the terrain.

"That's very representative of the show," says Tony Gayton, who created the series with his brother Joe (they've collaborated on films, including last year's Faster starring Dwayne Johnson). "Christians singing their praises to God, while things are just blowing up."

The contrast exemplifies the show's image of America: On one hand, the railroad's eventual success underscores the nation's can-do spirit; on the other, those who profited most from it were crooked to the bone.

"The greatest marvel of the 19th century was American — and it was built entirely on graft and corruption," observes Anson Mount, who stars as Cullen Bohannon, a former slave owner and Confederate soldier who takes a job on the railroad in a surreptitious effort to track down the murderers of his wife (in this week's episode, he spies one of the culprits on horseback). "That's perfect. If we're successful, we can turn the story into a great metaphor."

"Hell on Wheels" was the name given the itinerant town that moved across the country during construction of the railroad, populated by hardscrabble characters, often drunks and prostitutes. A death a day was not uncommon. "I can't believe people had to live their lives like that — at least we got to go home at the end of the night and have a nice, hot bubble bath," deadpans Dominique McElligott, who portrays Lily, a woman who survives an Indian attack that claims the life of her surveyor husband. "Progress was made, but it was slow and hard, and you can watch that journey from the comfort of your home."

Thomas Durant — the series' primary real-life character, played by Colm Meaney — stood to profit mightily, but only if he could build the first 40 miles of the railroad without government money. That struggle consumes the first season. "If he doesn't make the 40 miles by a certain date, it's all over for him," Meaney says.

Socially conscious rapper Common rounds out the cast as Elam Ferguson, a freed slave who hasn't found "liberation" to his liking. Joe Gayton explains, "The world's not ready for Elam. He doesn't want anything but total freedom and that causes a lot of conflict."

"I'm like, 'Hey, where is the freedom?'" agrees Common. "He's not putting his toe in the pool — he's diving right in." He adds that immersing himself into a character who was a slave is "emotional. I have a responsibility to the people who went through that to be as truthful as possible to what a black person at the time would be."

Bohannon becomes Ferguson's boss, and eventually, the two men wrestle their way to a tentative grudging respect. "Common and I had a hell of a good time developing this relationship," Mount says. "We were adamant that we can't do the modern PC thing" — he adapts a silly, happy voice — "'The white guy and the black guy are friends now!' That respect doesn't come easily. We literally have to fight each other for it." That visceral, bloody battle comes in the December 4 episode.

Mount, who dreamed of starring in a Western for years, found himself besieged by violent storms on location in Alberta: "When I'm out in the cold rain on a horse, I can hear God laughing at me — 'You asked for this.'" Still, he adds, "If you're uncomfortable in the shot, it usually looks awesome."

Hell on Wheels airs Sundays at 10/9c on AMC.

"Community" star says cast "optimistic" show will return

"Community" star says cast "optimistic" show will return

"Community" star Jim Rash says the NBC comedy's cast is "optimistic" that it will return despite the network pulling it from its midseason schedule.

NBC has said it expects to bring back the Thursday night show, which uses the exploits of a community college study group to jump off into bizarre and ambitious methods of storytelling. "30 Rock" will take over its 8 p.m. time slot in January.

"It's frustrating, but we're remaining optimistic and taking them at their word that we'll be back, and we're still shooting and continue to finish out our 22 and look forward to actually coming back," he told TheWrap.

Rash, whose character was recurring in the show's first two seasons, was elevated to a regular member of the cast with the current, third season.

Rash said the show's Christmas episode will be the last before "Community' goes on a midseason break -- and will be on par with past holiday episodes.

"We're all making a valiant push here to keep our show around," he said. "The spirits seem pretty good. It was obviously deflating at first because we're so proud of what we're doing," he said.

He also repeated frequent complaints from fans and show creator Dan Harmon that the show's overnight Nielsen numbers don't reflect its fan base, because it is especially popular online and on-demand.

"We're also victims of, in my opinion, sort of an antiquated way of figuring out what people are watching," he said. "It doesn't really make sense anymore in that way that our world has evolved."

Asked if the show may have hurt itself this season by getting too clever -- in one episode, for example, slightly different actions by the characters split their world into several different realities -- he said the show has balanced such wild storylines with basic character development.

"It's at its core doing what all shows do, which is introducing you to characters, showing you what they're going through, building on them, evolving them in such a way that you grow fond of them," he said.

Rash is also the co-writer of the new Alexander Payne film "The Descendants." Look for TheWrap's interview with him about the film soon.

Doctor Who: Series 7 Autumn 2012

Doctor Who: Series 7 Autumn 2012

Enjoy the current run of Doctor Who while it lasts because the wait for the next series is going to be a lengthy one.

Doctor Who Magazine has officially confirmed what has been clear for a while now – Series 7 will not air until Autumn 2012.

With the 9 month shoot on the seventh series not beginning until February 2012, it would have been impossible for the traditional Spring start. The best we could hope for would be an Easter special to make the long gap easier to swallow.

It seems likely that only half of Series 7 will be shown in Autumn 2012, with the remainder coming early 2013. This means the Christmas 2012 episode would air in the middle of a series rather than the end.

It would also mean that 2013 would see an eighth series airing in time for the 50th anniversary.

For clarity, our schedule prediction would be:

2012
Easter Special
Autumn – Series 7 Part 1
Christmas Special

2013
Spring – Series 7 Part 2
Autumn – Series 8
Christmas Special

Keith Lemon: The Film!

Keith Lemon: The Film!

Celebrity Juice presenter Keith Lemon is to star in his own film! Bang tidy! The potty-mouthed host – an incarnation of comedian Leigh Francis – has made it to the big screen in the imaginatively-titled ‘Keith Lemon: The Film’. Scenes for the movie were shot in Belfast over the weekend, showing Keith with a bloodied face and wearing no trousers. Nothing unexpected then. The story centres around Keith becoming a wealthy entrepreneur but then deciding he wants to blow his fortune. I wonder if Holly Willoughbooby or Fearne ‘Nostrils’ Cotton will make cameos. Either way, this is sure to be a laugh and a half so we can’t wait for it to be released in cinemas.

Celebrity Apprentice Australia tops Monday night

Around 1.61 million viewers tuned in to watch comedian Julia Morris become Australia's first Celebrity Apprentice on Nine.

Around 1.61 million viewers tuned in to watch comedian Julia Morris become Australia's first Celebrity Apprentice.

Nine's show dominated Monday night's television ratings with 1.05 million tuning in for the challenge at 7pm (ninth place), with that audience share increasing to 1.31 million for the boardroom at 7.30pm (fourth place) and then finally 1.61 million viewers staying on for the finale at 8.15pm.

After helping create a winning campaign for Mark Bouris, Morris fought off competition from team-mate Jason Coleman and was crowned the winner.

The comedian and the choreographer had to first beat former beauty queen Jesinta Campbell and former AFL star Shane Crawford in the challenge to produce a TV commercial and product launch for Bouris's company Yellow Brick Road.

Morris and Coleman then faced off in the boardroom in an effort to impress Bouris, who took on the role Donald Trump performed in the US version of the show.

Nine's The Big Bang Theory took out the third place with 1.36 million tuning in for the first episode and 1.164 million watching the second episode, giving it the fifth spot.

Seven's The X Factor, which featured superstar Kylie Minogue performing her duet Kids with show favourite Reece Martin as well as a medley of hits with the contestants, pulled in 1.45 million for the second place of the night.

Seven News with an audience share of 1.163 million, Today Tonight with 1.11 million and Home and Away with 1.063 million took the sixth, seventh and eighth spots for the Seven network.

Nine rounded out the top 10 with Nine News drawing in 982,000 viewers.
Kyle and Jackie O's Night With the Stars, a televised version of their breakfast radio show, drew 560,000 to Seven for the 20th spot of the night.

Michael Jackson's kids might get a reality show

Michael Jackson's kids might get a reality show

Apparently Michael Jackson's kids Prince, Paris and Blanket haven't already been through enough — now they might be fodder for a reality TV show.

A lengthy profile of the King of Pop's kids published in the Daily Mail claims there's talk in Hollywood "that they are considering an offer" to shoot a TV series that would provide an insight into their crazy mixed-up lives.

But said lives mightn't be as crazy and mixed-up as you'd expect: even after all they've been through, the kids are apparently pretty "down-to-earth". Prince and Paris, respectively 14 and 13, are said to be "surprisingly normal", and it's only nine-year-old Blanket who's "seriously withdrawn".

In other words, he'll be made to be the star of the reality show because his older siblings are normal and therefore make boring TV.

Of course, given this report comes from the Daily Mail it's likely the whole thing is bunk. So maybe Prince, Paris and Blanket will be allowed to grow up out of the spotlight after all.

South Park renewed for five more years

South Park renewed for five more years

So much for those rumours South Park is about to end — the controversial cartoon will stay on TV till at least 2016, through to the end its 20th season.

(Twentieth season?! Didn't South Park premiere, like, last year?)

US pay TV network Comedy Central announced that, despite reports claiming creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are bored of South Park, they'll continue to write, direct, edit and voice every episode of the series for three more seasons.

"South Park is a blast and we can't wait to make more," said the duo in a statement.

CAST AWAY!

… Ewan McGregor, whose name undoubtedly means a great deal of different things to different people but who will always be Jerome in The Pillow Book to me, is taking the plunge into series TV. DC Comics' Booster Gold heads to Syfy

DC Comics' Booster Gold heads to Syfy

Comic book fans, "Smallville" fans ... and yes, even "Fringe" fans, listen up! Syfy has just ordered a pilot based on the DC Comics' character, Booster Gold. According to THR, "Fringe" writer Andrew Kreisberg will be writing the pilot.

Dan Jurgens created the character of Booster Gold back in 1986. He's the superheroic identity of Michael Jon Carter, a resident of the 25th century who travels back in time to the present day. There, he makes use of his futuristic technology to become a hero. This hero is, at first, a bit like a modern day reality star, seeking fame and fortune. He later becomes a true hero.

"Smallville" fans will remember that Booster Gold appeared in the 10th and final season, where he teamed with both Clark Kent and Blue Beetle (another incarnation of which was one of the character's best friends in the comics).

So, "Smallville" fans, are you excited to see the DC Universe return to the small screen?

'Snowmageddon': Syfy brings you an evil snowglobe

'Snowmageddon': Syfy brings you an evil snowglobe

Just when you think that the Syfy channel's original movies couldn't get any more deliciously weird and wonderfully nutty, they announce their newest title, "Snowmageddon."

Some of the Zap2it team were caught in what we were calling "Snowmageddon" last year on the East Coast. So, is this one about cars sliding all over the New Jersey turnpike? Nope! Here we have an evil snow globe with the power to take over the world. No, we're not kidding. How can you possibly resist watching? You can't, can you? Yeah, neither can we. Plus, it stars Michael Hogan from "Battlestar Galactica." Win, win.

Syfy is doing a movie for every major holiday. We had "Zombie Apocalypse" as the first offering for Halloween. After "Snowmageddon," (and we love that our spell check knows that word now) we'll be treated to "Leprechaun" for St. Paddy's Day.

"Snowmageddon" will air on December 10th on Syfy.

'The Finder' plans another 'Bones' crossover episode -- with Eric Roberts, too

'The Finder' plans another 'Bones' crossover episode -- with Eric Roberts, too

The newest "Bones"/"The Finder" crossover is now official. Jack Hodgins will head to Florida to work with Walter on a new case, and he's bringing along guest star Eric Roberts.

According to TVLine, T.J. Thyne will reprise his "Bones" role when his character travels to the Everglades to work with Walter on finding "an object that no one in the government believes to exist."

Meanwhile, Roberts will guest in the same episode (the ninth of "Finder's" first season) as the head of a gypsy family named Uncle Shadrack. The episode will air early next year on Thursday nights at 9 p.m.

"Bones" and "Finder" showrunner Hart Hanson recently told reporters that he was working on the episode, saying "We're closing in on having a conspiracy theory episode in which the ideal character, of course, is Jack Hodgins to come down and be dueling conspiracy theorists with Walter. The idea is really funny." The only hitch was making sure it worked with Thyne's schedule, which it obviously did.

Hanson also said that he's hoping to pen a third crossover that could possibly involve another familiar face. "We're also looking to see if there is a place and a room for Stephen Fry to appear in a 'Finder' episode as Gordon Gordon Wyatt."
