Syfy Channel developing three new scripted dramas

Syfy Channel developing three new scripted dramas

Stargate Universe is cancelled. Caprica is cancelled. Lost Girl and Merlin are acquisitions from other countries, and Sanctuary can’t run forever (it’s currently in its fourth season). So just what is the future of scripted drama on Syfy Channel?

The network announced its development slate of three new original dramas this week, including — wait for it — a much-needed return to outer space.

Robert Hewitt Wolfe, who worked on Star Trek: DS9 before shepharding Gene Roddenberry’s Andromeda, is developing a currently untitled series from Universal Cable Productions, set on the Starship Defender.  “After decades of war, the newly formed Unity Democracy orders a volatile mix of humans and trans-humans to lead the Starship Defender on an expedition in search of lost worlds requiring law and order,” says Syfy.

The setting sounds a bit close to Andromeda — or maybe Firefly told from the point of view of the evil Alliance (“worlds requiring law and order” sounds like it could have a bit of colonialism / Manifest Destiny in it) — but I’m excited to see how Wolfe develops the series and gives it a unique stamp.

The network’s real bread and butter right now, however, are earth-bound shows set in the present day that follow the adventures of seemingly “ordinary” people — supposedly more relatable to a wider audience. (Just look at Warehouse 13‘s ratings.)

In Seeing Things (working title, from Fox Television Studios), “a cop becomes a ghost after his violent death and the only person who can help close his last case is a socially awkward man who realizes that the hallucinations he’s had all his life may not be a figment of his imagination.”  The series comes from writer and executive producer David Slack (Person of Interest, Lie to Me).

And in Ghost Projekt, based on a comic series, “a female KGB agent and male American weapons inspector form an unlikely partnership when a deadly force is unwittingly unleashed from a Siberian research facility.” Brett Matthews (Supernatural, and before that Joss Whedon’s assistant on Buffy, Angel and Firefly, according to IMDb) is writing and producing the show for CBS TV Studios.

There is no new Stargate series in the works yet, likely due more to franchise owner MGM’s own business strategy than to Syfy.

Syfy’s summer originals Warehouse 13, Alphas, and Haven have been doing well, and will each return in 2012.  Eureka also has one more year left in it (story). In the wintertime, Syfy has a remake of the U.K. monster show Being Human (premieres Monday, January 16, followed by Lost Girl). But what about the important fall and spring seasons, when basic cable has to go toe-to-toe with the best of the big networks?

The network knows that it’s taking a much bigger risk by programming its dramas in the fall season, especially on nights other than Friday.  That contributed to the demise of two-thirds of the scripted, dramatic hour category on Syfy this time last year.

A third Battlestar Galactica series, Blood and Chrome, is at the pilot stage but hasn’t been picked up to series yet.

While Syfy seems committed to keeping its original offerings relatively diverse, there’s no guarantee that the series currently on the development slate will make it to the pilot stage or to air.  Read the original release at Syfy’s news site, Blastr.

What’s happened to Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome?

What’s happened to Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome?

Just what has happened to the much-anticipated Battlestar Galactica pilot, Blood & Chrome, and what does its absence mean for the future of BSG...?

Back when the plug was pulled on Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica, there was the solace for BSG fans of a new series in development. This, too, would be set before the days of Battlestar Galactica, would be entitled Blood & Chrome, and would apparently be a bit more action-packed than Caprica. That’s, presumably, partly in response to the fact that one of the key criticisms of Caprica was that it was too dense, too concerned with backstory, and that not enough happened (as it turned out, not an entirely fair criticism).

Blood & Chrome was first announced as a web series, back in the summer of 2010. That was at a point when Caprica was still live and kicking. The original plan was to make nine or ten episodes, of ten minutes each in length, to premiere online. The focus of Blood & Chrome would be on a young William Adama, and his adventures during the first Cylon War.

Michael Taylor, co-executive producer on the remodelled Battlestar Galactica television series, was hired to write scripts for Blood & Chrome, and the idea was to shoot the episodes using virtual sets, based on the long-dismantled BSG sets that were digitally scanned before being taken apart. “We’re not going to be shying away from R-rated blood and guts and sex”, Taylor told the Chicago Tribune at the time.

Fast forward to October of 2010, and the news got better. Not only was Blood & Chrome pressing ahead, but Syfy had now ordered a full TV movie pilot off the back of the script work that Taylor had undertaken. There was a fairly strong hint, too, that a brand new spin-off television series might follow.

The announcement that Caprica was cancelled came in the same month, but that didn’t seem to dampen Syfy’s enthusiasm for Blood & Chrome. If anything, it might have contributed to the decision to upgrade it to TV. It’s hardly going out on a limb to suggest that Syfy would have liked Caprica to run for several years, and to replicate the success of BSG, but if that wasn’t going to happen, then perhaps Blood & Chrome would be a safer bet.

The pilot for Blood & Chrome, then, went before the cameras earlier this year. Filming began on the two-hour pilot in February 2011, and it’s fairly safe to assume that it was in the can a few weeks afterwards. Appreciating that there would be some sizeable post-production work, Blood & Chrome’s TV movie should, realistically, have been finished by now, or as near as dammit.

So where is it, and what’s happened? As it turns out, those are good questions.

The basics first. We’ve yet to hear that Syfy has scheduled Blood & Chrome for airing, nor have we caught word of preview screening reports. As things stand, we couldn’t tell you when to expect to see it.

However, back in August, AOL TV reported that Syfy, having viewed an early cut of the TV movie (albeit one without most of the visual effects in place), was now considering reverting the show back to a web series.

Unsurprisingly, this hasn’t been viewed as a good sign. Appreciating that the plan seemed to be to treat the TV movie as a pilot of sorts, that does of course mean that – as with many pilots – there’s no guarantee that it will be screened. But it’s discouraging that it appears to be giving Syfy cold feet.

The AOL report quotes Mark Stern, Syfy’s executive vice president of original programming, as saying that there was still the possibility that Blood & Chrome might be aired as a ‘backdoor pilot’, but conclusions drawn from the piece were not generally that positive.

Since then? Pretty much radio silence.

The most recent report came from Airlock Alpha last week, which itself commented on the fact that the show hadn’t appeared. Noting the official line that the show “has been hampered by post-production problems”, it casts doubt on that. So much so that it’s spoken to Doug Drexler, who is doing effects work on the show, and the site reports that the “special effects for Blood & Chrome are not only done, but they look amazing”.

And yet the show is still firmly off the radar.

The suspicion is that, for one reason or another, Syfy is reluctant to proceed. This may be down to quality or budget reasons, although given the criticisms aimed at the reality-slant of Syfy’s original programming mix, it may simply be that the show doesn’t fit the direction of the channel any more. That’s idle speculation on our part, certainly, but there’s little sign of Blood & Chrome seeing the light of day in the immediate future.

Perhaps we’ll hear more about it in 2012. But you have to wonder: are BSG’s days on the small screen numbered? At least until the Bryan Singer-directed movie presses ahead?

Pirates Are Hot
I don’t know if Johnny Depp has anything to do it that, but this year there are a lot of pirates projects in development. FX are working on Port Royal, Pyrates is a produced for Fox, and Republic Of Pirates is being developed for NBC.

Republic Of Pirates is based on the book by Colin Woodard, The Republic of Pirates, which is set during the “Golden Age of Piracy” from 1715 to 1725. It follows some of the world’s most notorious pirates as they forge their own rogue nation, called New Providence, which became the first democracy in the Americas.

Port Royal for FX - one of 2012-2013 TV new pilots
Pyrates, which is targeted for a summer 2012 premiere, and tells the story of the capture of the Spanish silver fleet in 1628.

Port Royal is set in the late 17th century on the island of Jamaica and chronicles the rise of the “richest and wickedest city” in the new world, a self-governing safe haven for cutthroat pirates, corrupt politicians and ruthless merchants.

More girls on HBO
The Big Girls is a book by Susanna Moore, which tells the story of a young psychiatrist at a maximum security women’s prison who attempts to treat the criminally insane while dealing with her own damaged psyche. Now Adam Mazer (from the HBO movie You Don’t Know Jack) is writing a pilot that is based on the book for HBO.

USA Network
Common Law was picked for a series. We told you here before about this twisted buddy comedy, and next year we could all see if it works.

CBS
Ralph Lamb was a cowboy, then a Las Vegas sheriff. It was 1960, so like many other stories from that time – it’s time to make a TV series out of it (Mad Men, The Playboy Club, Pan Am). The Goodfellas writer Nicholas Pileggi, together with CBS, are developing the idea. Pileggi is already signed on the small screen adaptation of Goodfellas (which originally starred Robert De Niro, who is executive-producing The 2-2, a new series which will premiere on CBS this coming midseason.

'One Tree Hill' Season 9 preview: What to expect on our last visit

'One Tree Hill' Season 9 preview: What to expect on our last visit

It's almost time for the final season of "One Tree Hill" to begin (January 11, 8 p.m., be there) and you know what that means... the next month is going to be full of excruciating, teasing, taunting promotion.

(Hey, CW... you can just send us the whole season right now. We won't tell anyone anything. We swear.*)

The very first footage of Season 9 has now hit the web, and it's only available for Facebook fans. The video begins with a voice over courtesy of one Brooke Davis (Sophia Bush). "I grew up in Tree Hill," she says, as we see poignant images of the iconic rivercourt and the house where she was raised. "I spent most of my life here. It's what I wished for."

We later hear her say, "I like Tree Hill like this. Warm. Safe. Loved.... It doesn't mean there haven't been hardships, but I'm here, and here is good."

But as we know, there is nothing safe about Tree Hill in its final season -- at least not for the gang we've grown to love over the better part of a decade. Tragedy strikes the Scott family early, with Nathan (James Lafferty) missing in action for a significant portion of the season.

A shot of Nathan tied up (and shut up) may be the biggest clue, as he muses, "People say hell is endless. They say it's our worst nightmare. The face of our darkness. Whatever it is, I say hell is empty, and all the devils are here."

The juxtaposition of Brooke's affection for Tree Hill with Nathan's nightmarish reality is chilling.

Nathan's situation, of course, tests Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti) as a mother, a wife, and a friend. Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) returns to help her out, for a highly anticipated appearance featuring some rather unfortunate hair. (Zap2it was lucky enough to watch him film his scenes, so be on the lookout for some CMM-centric scoop later this month!)

Adding to the serious lack of warm-safe-love in Tree Hill, we can expect a return appearance from Brooke's assailant, Xavier (Devin McGee), who went to prison after killing Quentin in Season 6. Details of the storyline are being kept under wraps, but on-set sources tell us that Bush and Austin Nichols' performances this season are their best ever.

We can additionally expect to see Clay (Robert Buckley) and Quinn (Shantel VanSanten) put through the ringer as pressure begins to weigh on him and a downward spiral begins. We've been teased with the news of a Tree Hill wedding this season, and while Clay and Quinn may seem the most obvious couple headed down the aisle, once the season begins, you may be betting on Mouth (Lee Norris) and Millie (Lisa Goldstein).

We're hearing that Alex (Jana Kramer) only appears in two episodes this season, so the romantic scenes we see between her and Chase (Stephen Colletti) may not be particularly telling of their relationship's direction. While there may not be a ton of romance in his life, we can expect plenty of bromance for Chase when Chris Keller (Tyler Hilton) makes his triumphant return. Their bond is strong, y'all. And possibly completely one-sided.

And finally, of course, there is Dan Scott (Paul Johansson), the Scott patriarch who tends to signal tragedy, trauma, and terrible memories for everyone in town -- except, of course, for Jamie (Jackson Brundage). Dan has survived far longer than we expected him to on this series. Will Season 9 lead him to true redemption?

As if you didn't have it marked in your calendar, we'll remind you one more time: January 11. Stock up on wine and Kleenex. It's going to be a heck of a ride.

AMC Networks CEO: AMC Is ‘Way Underpriced’ in Current Carriage Deals

AMC Networks CEO: AMC Is ‘Way Underpriced’ in Current Carriage Deals

Josh Sapan tells a UBS investor conference that the channel deserves 75 cents per subscriber per month and says in terms of ad rates for his company’s networks, there is opportunity over the coming years "to be rewarded for what we put on the air today.”

AMC Networks president and CEO Josh Sapan said here Tuesday at a big UBS media investor conference that current carriage fees for his company’s AMC network are too low given its addition of original programs in recent years.

“Our rates on AMC are particularly out of whack,” Sapan said at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference, pointing out that key distribution deals were struck years ago. “AMC is quite a different channel in 2011 than it was in 2006, 2007 and 2008” when it had no originals. “AMC is way underpriced.”

At a minimum, AMC is a 75 cents per subscriber per month channel, he said, although “that is not the rate we will necessarily be paid tomorrow.” He emphasized he expects increases in carriage fees to be an evolutionary process.

Collins Stewart analyst Thomas Eagan said he estimates that AMC currently gets 40 cents to 50 cents per sub per month in affiliate fees. SNL Kagan estimates AMC got carriage fees of 25 cents per sub per month this year and will get 26 cents next year.

Asked about IFC, Sundance Channel and WE tv, Sapan said “the disparity is less on our other channels.”

Discussing ad rates for AMC Networks channels compared to other TV networks, including broadcasters, Sapan said the cable networks firm has made strides, but “we are hardly at full justice.” He added: “There is certainly opportunity over the next [years]...to be rewarded for what we put on the air today.”

Sapan said original shows will remain a focus for his company. “We’re comfortable with five originals on AMC,” he said, but reiterated that there could be more non-fiction series launching next year following the success of Walking Dead talk series Talking Dead.

Asked about ad market trends, he said the scatter ad market continues to see “some tentativeness” as marketers are buying much closer to airtime.

Ice Cube Developing Revenge Drama at FX

The rapper-actor would star in Prospect Park's "Eye for an Eye."

Ice Cube is getting into business with FX.

The rapper-actor is eyeing his first series regular role in Eye for an Eye, a revenge drama in development at FX.

Produced by Ice Cube's Cube Vision with Jeff Kwatinetz's Prospect Park, the Friday actor would appear as a veteran paramedic who after years responding to violent scenes takes matters into his own hands and turns into a vigilante out for revenge.

Ice Cube would also executive produce along with Matt Alvarez, his partner at Cube Vision. Prospect Park's Kwatinetz would also exec produce alongside the production company's TV partner Josh Barry.

The project joins an FX development slate that also includes projects from Justified producer Graham Yost, Dennis Lehane and Red Hot Chili Peppers' frontman Anthony Kiedis.

Ice Cube, repped by UTA, executive produces TBS' Are We There Yet series, and next has the feature 21 Jump Street due in theaters next year.

Prospect Park, which recently abandoned online plans for soap operas One Life To Live and All My Children, has been busy this development season, with a number of projects in the works at both broadcast and cable networks, including GILF, with Wilfred star Jason Gann, which is set up at FX.

Comedy Central Bets on 'Gajillionaires,' Two More Comedies

Comedy Central Bets on 'Gajillionaires,' Two More Comedies

The Viacom-owned cable network's development slate includes script orders for two animated projects and a live action buddy comedy.

Comedy Central is bulking up on its comedic offerings.

In an effort to expand its slate, which already includes such shows as South Park, Workaholics and Tosh.0, the Viacom-owned network has ordered scripts for three more projects, two of which are animated.

There's Gajillionaires, a half-hour animated show about the uber-wealthy Benjamin and George Krabbe and their misadventures in the world of big business. Bailouts, corrupt senators, sycophantic cronies like Chef Boyardee and Dick Cheney and an undying love for Tipper Gore are all along for the ride.

The project, created, written and produced by Yoni Brenner (Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs), counts Joel Kuwahara, Scott Greenberg and Mark McJimsey of Bento Box along with Peter Principato, Paul Young and Tucker Voorhees of Principato-Young Entertainment as executive producers.

Among the other scripts Comedy Central has ordered: Grubstein & Grubstein, an animated comedy created and co-executive produced by Arthur Jones and Karl Ackerman based on two twenty-something brothers who inherit a Brooklyn brownstone filled with oddball tenants.

Finally, the network has nabbed a script for Upstate, a half-hour narrative based on two guys who return to the summer town of their youth and live like they are sixteen again, complete with bonfires, jet-ski races and stealing Uncle Gary's pot. The project is written and co-executive produced by its stars, Jon Gabrus and Justin Tyler.

Bag of Bones Coming to A&E December 11th 2011

Bag of Bones Coming to A&E December 11th 2011

A&E Network presents “Stephen King’s Bag of Bones,” a four-hour epic miniseries based on The New York Times #1 bestselling novel, and featuring Pierce Brosnan’s return to television. The two-night event from Sony Pictures Television premieres in December.

“Bag of Bones” is a ghost story of grief and lost love's enduring bonds, about an innocent child caught in a terrible crossfire and a new love haunted by past secrets. Melissa George (“In Treatment”), Annabeth Gish (“Brotherhood”), Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls), William Schallert (“The Patty Duke Show”), Jason Priestley (“Beverly Hills, 90210”) and Caitlin Carmichael (“True Blood”) also star.

In “Bag of Bones,” bestselling novelist Mike Noonan (Brosnan) is unable to stop grieving after the sudden death of his wife Jo (Gish). Suffering from writer’s block, a dream inspires him to return to the couple's lakeside retreat in western Maine. While there, Mike befriends an attractive young widow, Mattie (George) and her daughter Kyra (Carmichael), and becomes involved in a custody battle with the child's enormously wealthy grandfather, Max (Schallert). Though his ability to write suddenly returns, Mike is plagued by ever-escalating nightmares and mysterious ghostly visitations from Sara Tidwell (Rose), a blues singer whose spirit lingers in the house. As he is haunted by the many secrets at the lake, Mike comes to realize that his late wife still has something to tell him.

Castiel Returns to 'Supernatural': Your Angelic Prayers Were Heard

Castiel Returns to 'Supernatural': Your Angelic Prayers Were Heard

'Supernatural' fans, Castiel is coming back to the show for at least three episodes in 2012.

A spokesperson for Warner Bros., which makes the CW show, said that Misha Collins, who plays the fan-favorite character Castiel, will return in the current season's episode 17. Depending on how many breaks the show takes before it airs the seventeenth episode of season 7, Castiel could be back on our screens by February or March.

Castiel will also appear in two subsequent episodes, but the spokesperson did not say which episodes those would be.

"Please note that there's really nothing else that we are able to add about these specific episodes or the details of his return at this time," the Castiel publicity missive said. So you know as much as we do at this time.

Are you happy about the return of Castiel? As fans know, he was last seen after he was taken over by the Leviathan; he disappeared into a lake and had been presumed dead (although as fans of the show know, death is rarely a hindrance to the reappearance of a character).

Please come back tomorrow for more 'Supernatural' news: I'll share my thoughts on the excellent Dec. 2 episode of the show and will have an announcement regarding my weekly reviews.

Larry King's 'Dinner' Reveal: Freeze Me When I Die

Larry King's 'Dinner' Reveal: Freeze Me When I Die

Larry King may not be afraid to ask the questions everyone wants to know, but there is one thing that scares him.

The 77-year-old newsman told a unique group of celebrities about his fears and posthumous desires during 'Dinner With the Kings,' a CNN special that aired on Sun., Dec. 4.

"Oh I fear death," King told his guests, including Conan O'Brien, Tyra Banks, Shaquille O'Neal, Seth MacFarlane, Jack Dorsey, Quincy Jones and Russell Brand. "My biggest fear is death, because I don't think I'm going anywhere."

King said he doesn't have a belief system, so he thinks he's going nowhere when death comes knocking on his door. However, he did say over a meal prepared by Wolfgang Puck that he has a plan.

"I want to be frozen on the hope that they'll find whatever I died of and bring me back," he said.

O'Brien latched onto King's mortality statements and pressured him for more.

"It's the only hedging of a bet," King said about being cryogenically frozen.

Is Fox News going centrist for 2012?

Is Fox News going centrist for 2012?

Consider another media critic convinced.

Gabriel Sherman, a contributing editor at New York magazine who has spent many a word on Fox News, wrote a post for the magazine's Daily Intel blog Monday suggesting Fox has adopted a "new strategy" for 2012.

"Fox is trying to credibly capture the center without alienating its loyal core of rabid viewers. To this end, the network is flexing its news-gathering muscles in high-profile ways that will capture media attention," Sherman wrote.

Sherman is not the first media critic to make this claim. Howard Kurtz did so back in September after talking with network chairman Roger Ailes, and observing a Fox News debate in Orlando.

Kurtz wrote that Ailes has a series of anchors and correspondents -- like Chris Wallace, Bret Baier and Megyn Kelly -- who would fit in at any news network with their credentials and willingness to ask tough questions.

Sherman too sees the news side of Fox adopting a more pugnacious approach with the GOP candidates. While the prime time hosts continue to operate in their own universe, Baier conducted a widely praised interview with Mitt Romney, Wallace has peppered Michele Bachmann and the entire field was subject to a roaming New York Times reporter at Saturday's "candidates forum."

The New York Times? That bastion of liberalism and bias?

Like Kurtz, Sherman remains skeptical, particularly since he does not see this shift as a case of old-fashioned media objectivity. It's just another way of benefiting

Fox.

"2012 is shaping up to be the year that Ailes decided Fox will benefit if the political world recognizes that his network is willing to make GOP candidates sweat in front of their base. Like any good candidate, the network plans to tack toward the center for the general election," he wrote.

Sherman's language suggests his opinion of the network has not changed since May, when he wrote about Fox as if it were a political organization as much as a media network - something MSNBC's Rachel Maddow has seized on in calling the GOP race the "Murdoch primary."

Yet whatever Fox's motives, this marks another prominent Fox critic noting a more moderate shift for the network.

"The GOP primary candidates may think Fox News studios are friendly territory. But while it will continue to function as home turf, especially in the prime time hours, they shouldn't be surprised to see more curveballs," Sherman wrote.

With another Fox debate less than two weeks away, we'll all have another chance to scrutinize.

'Real Housewives' Star Kim Richards Enters Rehab

'Real Housewives' Star Kim Richards Enters Rehab

And the troubles keep on mounting for the "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" cast.

"RHoBH" cast member Kim Richards has entered an undisclosed rehab facility to seek treatment, several sources confirm to ET Online.

Though it isn't clear what affliction Richards, 47, is seeking treatment for, her use of alcohol has become a point of concern on the series. During the "Beverly Hills" season finale last January, Richards' sister, Kyle Richards, lashed out at her sister, accusing her of being an alcoholic. More recently, in an episode that aired in October, Richards' new castmate, Brandi Glanville, accused Richards of being "wasted out of her f---ing mind," an accusation that Richards denied at the time.

The second season of "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," which premiered in September, has already been marred by tragedy, with the August suicide of cast member Russell Armstrong -- a month his wife, Taylor Armstrong, filed for divorce -- casting a shadow over the season.

Jon Stewart on Herman Cain's 'Pokemon' Goodbye: 'I'm Gonna Miss Him So Much'

Jon Stewart on Herman Cain's 'Pokemon' Goodbye: 'I'm Gonna Miss Him So Much'

What are "the greatest nine words ever spoken by an American politician"?

According to Jon Stewart on Monday's "Daily Show," they are these, as delivered by Herman Cain as he announced he is suspending his presidential campaign: "I believe these words came from the Pokemon movie."

Also read: Jon Stewart: Herman Cain is Lying About 'Friendship' With Woman -- or Terrible at Closing the Deal

Cain went on to recite a few lines from the movie about how life is full of challenges, as explained during the "Pokemon" closing credits.

Stewart and his writers are openly mourning Cain's exit from the race, and not just for quoting "Pokemon" at odd times. His foibles have made Cain the comedian's equivalent, Stewart explained, of a big, juicy steak.

"I'm gonna miss him so much," Stewart said.

Katey Sagal on 'Sons of Anarchy' Season Finale -- and How It All Ends

Katey Sagal on 'Sons of Anarchy' Season Finale -- and How It All Ends

Ask Katey Sagal if being married to "Sons of Anarchy" creator Kurt Sutter means she knows how the series will end, and she lets out a sigh.

"Oh," she says. "No. I wish I did … but it's better for me just to find out when everybody else finds out. You know, I get little tidbits here and there. I don't get much."

Her daughter, however, believes she has the inside track on the "Hamlet" inspired biker-gang drama, which airs its season four finale tonight at 10/9c on FX.

"She knows 'Hamlet' very well. And she keeps saying, 'Oh, if he's following this, this is going to happen!' We all try to figure it out. But I don't know how close he's going to stick to that … I'm not sure what he's going to do."

One thing the show has done this season is move the story forward with a tense, terrific series of changes: Club president Clay turned to the dark side, original member Piney was murdered, and Sagal's character, Gemma, struggled to keep their family together.

Sagal, a Golden Globe winner also well-known for "Married … with Children" and "Futurama," talked to TheWrap about Gemma's future and how her past will continue to haunt her.

This season has been so tension-filled, and then the finale feels like it could have been a series finale …
I'll tell you, for me, this season was the most complicated to track as I was going. Because really what you're doing is, over a 13‑episode arc, you're telling a story that just keeps extending. And you know, it's really only a two‑week time period, I think, that the whole season takes place, maybe even less.

So it was just more complicated this season to track where Gemma was emotionally, because there were so many twists and turns. From realizing that the letters were stateside to realizing that Tara knew about them, and then there were copies of them. You know, thinking for a moment that we were in the clear because I really thought that they'd been burned. (Gemma) didn't realize they were copied until much later, so yes, there was a lot of ups and downs through the entire season.

Do you feel like this was a different Gemma this season than we've really seen before? This was maybe the first time that she was truly rattled a little bit?
Yes, I think what you're seeing towards the end of the season is a little bit of a rattle. I thought it was really interesting, that whole Tara and Gemma part of it all. Because Gemma's whole focus is keeping her family together. She simply lives for that club, and lives for her grandchildren, and her son.

David Burtka, NPH Boyfriend and Actor, Joins E! Red Carpet Team

E!'s new correspondent may look especially familiar to Neil Patrick Harris fans.

David Burtka, the actor-turned-chef who is also NPH's fiancée, has signed on to serve as a correspondent on "E! News," as well as E! specials and the network's "Live From the Red Carpet" coverage.

Burtka has appeared on Broadway and in many TV guest roles, including on Harris' "How I Met Your Mother." He played Scooter, ex-boyfriend of Alyson Hannigan's Lily.

Burtka, who most recently made a cameo -- alongside Harris  -- in "A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas," put his entertainment career on hold in 2009, when he graduated from the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Pasadena and started a catering company, Gourmet M.D.

According to E! Online, Kwanten will appear in the Valentine's Day episode. Warning, spoilers ahead.

It's the first Valentine's Day for newly single Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and she drags Schmidt (Max Greenfield) out to a bar to be her wingman. That's where Kwanten's character, Oliver, enters the picture.

The 'True Blood' star is just one of many familiar faces making a stop on one of this year's best new comedies.

Justin Long has had a recurring role as Jess' new beau/co-worker, Lizzy Caplan will guest star as Julia, a new love interest for Nick and Kali Hawk will play Winston's ex-girlfriend. Other Season 1 guest stars include June Diane Raphael as Jess' lesbian OB/GYN friend and Rachael Harris as the vice principal at Jess' school.

Xbox live unveils latest cable challenge

Xbox live unveils latest cable challenge

Microsoft is the latest technology giant to storm cable's barricades.

The company is unveiling overhauls to its Xbox 360 console and Xbox Live online arm this week -- a facelift that will bring with it a slew of new entertainment partners and an improved voice-activated control system.

Or as Xbox's slightly grandiloquent ads promise: "TV is becoming more amazing."

The update goes live on Tuesday.

The new look and features will allow users to access Epix, YouTube, HBO Go and others from their consoles or from Xbox's online service.

These new offerings complement Hulu Plus, Zune and Netflix, which are already available to the service's members via apps.

Television channels and video-on-demand offerings will be provided through Verizon FiOS and Comcast.

Not everything will be immediately available and the rollout of new content partners will take place in stages over the next month and into 2012. Among the content providers that will go live with the launch of the service are Hulu Plus, ESPN, Netflix , MSNBC Today and EPIX.

Microsoft's Bing search engine will be integrated into the platform. Users will be able to search for content through voice commands and hand gestures thanks to Kinetic, Microsoft's answer to Apple's Siri.

Not that everything comes free. In addition to a $60 gold membership to Xbox Live, users will have to pay cable providers for access to the various channels.

That makes Xbox less of a cable killer and more of a potential new revenue stream.

Nielsen Admits Error in Kids' Viewership Numbers, But Still Says Nick Is Down

Nielsen Admits Error in Kids' Viewership Numbers, But Still Says Nick Is Down

Nielsen says it erred when it told The Wall Street Journal that childrens' viewership is up this season even as Nickelodeon's ratings are down -- but still stands by its Nickelodeon numbers.

The ratings company told the Journal -- and later TheWrap -- that viewing by children ages 2 to 11 has climbed 1.7 percent this season compared to last fall. But the company said Monday that in fact their viewership is down 2.9 percent.

Though Nielsen has said there is nothing wrong with the numbers it has collected for Nick, the error gives the cable network ammunition as it tries to make its case that it is being undercounted.

Speaking at a UBS Global Media & Communications Conference on Monday, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman said he is "frustrated" by the "inexplicable" ratings drop.

"As of now, however imperfect Nielsen is, it's the only game in town so we have to live with it," he said, according to Broadcasting & Cable.

He said he still expects year over year growth for Viacom's media network thanks to strong affiliate sales and cost containment.

Nick declined to comment Monday. In a statement, Nielsen expressed regret and said no other data was affected by the error.

"In calculating a year-over-year comparison, Nielsen used 2010 data that was correct as reported," the company said in a statement. "Due to a reporting change made in February of 2011, we did not apply a standard adjustment for year-over-year comparisons. ... No underlying data or ratings were affected by this recalculation."

In November ratings released last week, Nick was down 19 percent year-over-year in ratings for viewers age 2 and older. In October, its ratings fell 13 percent. Nick first noticed its ratings dropping in September.

Nick has said it still expects to finish the year as the top network among viewers age 2 to 11, and that the network plans 500 new episodes in the next few months to increase ratings.

When 'Glee' Met Chewbacca: Scoop on the Wookie's Presence

When 'Glee' Met Chewbacca: Scoop on the Wookie's Presence

After the cast of 'Glee' tweeted a lot of lovable photos with our favorite Wookie, Chewbacca a few weeks ago, Gleeks were left wondering what Chewbacca was up to on set. So when AOL TV got Harry Shum Jr. on the phone last week, we had to ask for some scoop about his furry encounter with the 'Star Wars' star.

"It was incredibly awesome," Shum said. "It was a huge surprise."

Why was Chewie there? Warning, minor spoilers below.

"He makes an appearance into Artie's dream in a way," Shum said. "I can't really delve into the details, but it's something to do with Artie."

It turns out Chewie entertained the very excited 'Glee' cast and crew, but left before some of the stars hit the set.

"Half of us came in right after he was done and it was like a mad house," he said. "Everyone's face was so happy. They were showing off their pictures."

Not one to deprive its cast of a Wookie enouncter, the powers that be at 'Glee' brought Chewbacca back.

"They actually got him to come back to take pictures with us, too," he said with a laugh. "We were soooo angry that we didn't get a picture with Chewbacca. It was so funny how many people actually love Chewbacca."

Ratings: 'Simpsons,' 'Allen Gregory' Way Up; 'Pan Am' Hits Series Low

Ratings: 'Simpsons,' 'Allen Gregory' Way Up; 'Pan Am' Hits Series Low

Fox's block of animated series received a major boost Sunday night, with "Allen Gregory" surging 60 percent, while ABC's "Pan Am" fell to a series low, according to preliminary numbers. NBC won the night overall.

Fox began its night at 7 with overrun from the Green Bay Packers/New York Giants game, which posted the night's best numbers in the adults 18-49 demographic, grabbing a 9.6 rating/25 share, with 26.8 million total viewers. The end of the game, combined with "The OT," filled the 7:30 slot, drawing an 8.3/21 in the demo and 22.2 million total viewers. "The Simpsons" at 8 jumped 54 percent over last week, grabbing a 4.0/10 in the demo and 9 million total viewers, while "Allen Gregory," which premiered soft and has declined from there, received a much-needed 60 percent gain over last week for a 2.4/6 in the demo and 5.2 million total viewers. "Family Guy" at 9 climbed 25 percent for a 3.5/8 in the demo with 7 million total viewers, while "The Cleveland Show" at 9:30 bested last week's "American Dad" in the same timeslot by 14 percent with a 2.5/6 in the demo and 5.4 million total viewers.

ABC, meanwhile, suffered declines all around. "America's Funniest Home Videos" at 7 dropped 22 percent to a 1.4/4 in the demo and 5.9 million total viewers, while "Once Upon a Time" the following hour dipped 9 percent to a 3.1/7 and 9.6 million total viewers. "Desperate Housewives" at 9 dropped 13 percent from its last original airing three weeks ago, hitting a series low of 2.6/6 and 8 million total viewers. "Pan Am" rounded out the night of bad news at 10, slipping 11 percent from its last original airing three weeks ago to a series low of 1.6/4 and 4.6 million total viewers.

On CBS, "60 Minutes" at 7 drew a 1.8/5 in the demo and 11.9 million total viewers. "The Amazing Race" at 8 dipped to a season low with a 2.7/6 in the demo and 9.6 million total viewers. "The Good Wife" the following hour was flat with two weeks ago, matching a series low with a 1.9/4 in the demo and 9.7 million total viewers.

At NBC, three consecutive episodes of "Football Night in America" from 7 to 8:30 drew a 1.7/5 and 5.2 million total viewers, a 2.6/7 and 7.4 million total viewers, and a 5.1/12 and 14.1 million total viewers. "Sunday Night Football" at 8:30, featuring the Detroit Lions playing the New Orleans Saints, drew a 6.5/15 in the demo and 16.5 million total viewers. Overall the network was the best-rated of the night with an average 5.2/13 in the demo, and also the most watched with an average 13.7 million total viewers.

The Top 10 Fall Ratings Losers and Gainers, From 'Chuck' to 'Men'

The Top 10 Fall Ratings Losers and Gainers, From 'Chuck' to 'Men'

CBS comedies, led by "Two and a Half Men," have scored the biggest ratings gains this season, while CW shows and ones that have moved to Friday are taking the biggest slides.

No show has fallen like NBC's soon-to-depart "Chuck," which is down to less than half its previous average rating. But ratings trends are ominous for many long-running dramas and reality shows.

The Friday losses are to be expected: The night, where "Chuck" is serving out its last season, has long been a TV no-man's land. And the CW losses aren't as severe as they look, because the network has such a targeted audience -- it focuses on young women -- that even minor drops can look huge in terms of percentages.

To track this fall's biggest ratings gainers and losers, TheWrap looked at Nielsen ratings in the 18-49 demographic, the one most important to advertisers, for every returning network show. We focused on gains and losses by percentage (see charts).

We looked at the start of the current fall season through the week of Nov. 13, compared to the equivalent time period last year.

CBS vs. CW

CBS, whose comedies dominate the list of shows on the upswing (left), co-owns the CW, where every returning show this season has been down.

Kelly Kahl, senior executive vice president of CBS primetime, is in charge of scheduling for both networks. While CBS's bright spots are more obvious, he points to promising starts for the new CW shows "Hart of Dixie," "Ringer," and "The Secret Circle."

And no, he doesn't worry that CBS could be pulling viewers from its younger cousin, which it owns with Warner Bros.

"I dont think we're cannibalizing the CW. It's not a zero sum game with ratings anymore," he said. Especially considering that so many CW users watch on DVR or online, he added, "for somebody to do better doesn't mean somebody else is doing worse."

Sliding CW dramas include "Gossip Girl" and "Nikita," both of which are down 33 percent. "Supernatural," meanwhile, is down 27.3 percent.

Aging Dramas and Reality Shows

Besides the CW and Friday shows, many dramas and reality shows have suffered significant slides, even as comedies thrive. Age seems to be taking a toll on dramas and reality shows, though not sitcoms, some of which are booming even after many seasons.

"Long-running dramas and some of these long-running reality shows are taking a hit. 'Dancing with the Stars,' 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,' 'Biggest Loser' and 'Top Model' are taking a beating," said Horizon Media senior vice president of research Brad Adgate. "I think these long-running entertainment genres have lost some steam. This reinforces that comedy is back on the upswing."
