Rachel Griffiths, Anthony LaPaglia cast in Julian Assange TV movie
Rachel Griffiths and Anthony LaPaglia have signed up to star in an upcoming drama about Julian Assange.
Underground will follow the early life of WikiLeaks founder Assange, with newcomer Alex Williams in the lead role.
The cast will also include Callan McAuliffe (I Am Number Four), Laura Wheelwright (Animal Kingdom), Benedict Samuel (Home and Away) and Jordan Raskopoulos (The Axis of Awesome).
The project is written and directed by award-winning Australian filmmaker Robert Connolly and will be aired on Australia's Network Ten at a later date.
It will be internationally distributed via NBC Universal. Filming is expected to begin later this month.
Matchbox Pictures producer Helen Bowden said of the project: "Underground is the true story of a group of schoolboys in Melbourne who hacked into the some of the biggest corporate and military organisations in the world, at the dawn of the internet age. It is a fascinating tale and we are very excited to be bringing it to the screen."
Network Ten's Rick Maier added: "Everyone has an opinion about Julian Assange. This film will deliver a compelling insight into who Julian is, and how he became one of the most talked-about figures of our time. We are delighted Rachel and Anthony are on board for this exciting television event for Ten."
Julian Assange appeared as a guest star in the 500th episode of The Simpsons earlier this year.
The 40-year-old has previously failed in an appeal against an extradition order from the UK to Sweden to face charges of rape and sexual assault, but is awaiting the outcome of a further appeal to the Supreme Court.
