Pilots in production for 2012-2013

Pirates Are Hot
I don’t know if Johnny Depp has anything to do it that, but this year there are a lot of pirates projects in development. FX are working on Port Royal, Pyrates is a produced for Fox, and Republic Of Pirates is being developed for NBC.

Republic Of Pirates is based on the book by Colin Woodard, The Republic of Pirates, which is set during the “Golden Age of Piracy” from 1715 to 1725. It follows some of the world’s most notorious pirates as they forge their own rogue nation, called New Providence, which became the first democracy in the Americas.

Pyrates, which is targeted for a summer 2012 premiere, and tells the story of the capture of the Spanish silver fleet in 1628.

Port Royal is set in the late 17th century on the island of Jamaica and chronicles the rise of the “richest and wickedest city” in the new world, a self-governing safe haven for cutthroat pirates, corrupt politicians and ruthless merchants.

More girls on HBO
The Big Girls is a book by Susanna Moore, which tells the story of a young psychiatrist at a maximum security women’s prison who attempts to treat the criminally insane while dealing with her own damaged psyche. Now Adam Mazer (from the HBO movie You Don’t Know Jack) is writing a pilot that is based on the book for HBO.

USA Network
Common Law was picked for a series. We told you here before about this twisted buddy comedy, and next year we could all see if it works.

CBS
Ralph Lamb was a cowboy, then a Las Vegas sheriff. It was 1960, so like many other stories from that time – it’s time to make a TV series out of it (Mad Men, The Playboy Club, Pan Am). The Goodfellas writer Nicholas Pileggi, together with CBS, are developing the idea. Pileggi is already signed on the small screen adaptation of Goodfellas (which originally starred Robert De Niro, who is executive-producing The 2-2, a new series which will premiere on CBS this coming midseason.
