Kay riffs on Royal Variety problems

Peter Kay managed to smooth over the gaps during the filming of the 99th Royal Variety Performance.

The comedian hosted the event at Salford Quays in Greater Manchester which included star turns from artists including Tony Bennett, Pixie Lott, Cee Lo Green and Britain's Got Talent winner Jai McDowall.

The second half saw the show's biggest performers take the stage, but it didn't go completely smoothly.

Barry Manilow sang a medley of his songs but when he finished, he apologetically approached the audience and asked for a producer, saying, "the whole tune was wrong, I was singing in the wrong place" - before he left the stage as a second take was arranged.

As the stage was reset for Manilow, during the short interlude host Kay reprised a routine he had done moments earlier about popular TV shows, while introducing the singer.

Breaking the awkward silence with gales of laughter from the audience, he strode on stage with the words: "What about Embarrassing Bodies eh?"

A second problem then hit the show after Manilow's performance, with a public address system announcement to the audience: "Ladies and gentlemen, please remain seated, we do have a technical problem."

The stage was left empty for several minutes before Kay re-emerged to ask: "Anyone got a screwdriver?"

After a performance of the Phantom Of The Opera by Nicole Scherzinger, Kay then came back on to joke: "Thanks for buying a ticket. Technically tonight you are my employers and judging by what's gone on I wish I'd thrown a sickie."

The show will be screened on ITV1 on December 14.
