Sony Steps Up Manufacturing After Pre-Orders Land F65 4K Camera in U.S. Top 200

The cameras are scheduled to ship out to customers in early January.

More than 200 of Sony’s F65 4K digital cinematography cameras have been pre-ordered in the U.S., according to a Sony exec.

At a Saturday open house in West Hollywood that featured the anticipated camera, Sony VP Satoshi Kanemura told The Hollywood Reporter that various directors and studios have already started testing the camera with an eye toward feature and TV productions.

Sony plans to begin shipping the camera to customers in early January and started to take pre-orders in September.

Kanemura said US-based resellers of the F65 would include AbelCine, BandPro and Rule Boston Camera.

Sony previously reported that the first batch of F65 cameras had been sold to rental business Otto Nemenz International.

The camera -- which is being developed with an 8K sensor and capable of handling 16-bit 4K and higher-resolution imagery -- was one of the most talked about announcements of the 2011 NAB Show, where the prototype was first unveiled. The base price for the F65 is $65,000.

West Hollywood-based postproduction facility Hollywood DI hosted the open house with partners and exhibitors including Sony, AbelCine, and Blackmagic Design. The focus was on the F65 camera, as well as related postproduction tools and techniques. The event also featured screenings of several shorts, including Curtis Clark’s The Arrival, which were lensed with the developing camera.
