‘The Vampire Diaries’ spinoff ‘The Originals’ adds new main female character

Read more details about The Originals, the Klaus-centric spinoff of The Vampire Diaries! Showrunner Julie Plec reveals a new main character…

The Originals is a planned spinoff of The Vampire Diaries which, if picked up for the fall season by The CW, will star Joseph Morgan (Klaus) and Phoebe Tonkin (Hayley). No firm word yet on Daniel Gillies (Elijah) or Claire Holt (Rebekah), although Julie Plec is interested in including both.

The series will also feature a character named Marcel (who has yet to be cast), and now Plec tells Zap2It of another original (get it?) character: Cami.

The episode of The Vampire Diaries airing April 25 (4×20) will serve as a backdoor pilot of this drama, and introduce the setting (the French Quarter of New Orleans) and the cast of characters.

Klaus travels to New Orleans where he meets his old protege Marcel, who has taken over as the supernatural leader of the town. Now we know that he also meets Cami, a young and keen phychology student who has no idea about the existence of supernatural creatures, and who will be intrigued by Klaus and the all-important question: what makes someone evil?

Also worth noting is that The Originals will film both in New Orleans and in Atlanta, where The Vampire Diaries is also being shot. Having the same location will certainly facilitate crossovers more easily, which means we could see characters like Rebekah pop up on both shows, or The Originals could more easily feature Katherine if the writers so chose.

We can’t wait to see what else Plec has planned for this intriguing new series! Hear what we had to say about the news when it first broke on Hypable’s Vampire Hype podcast.
